At a recent live show with his Titanium Tart project, former Iron Maiden drummer Nicko McBrain made it abundantly clear that after 42 years behind the kit he believes no one can truly step into his shoes The 73-year-old musician who retired from touring at the end of 2024 spoke with characteristic humor and pride

As reported by VICE, he quipped, “They’ve got a lovely lad… he’s a baby. He’s got a little tiny drum set… but here’s the thing: … I’m still the best-looking bloke in Iron Maiden”

Throughout his comments, McBrain praised his successor Simon Dawson as doing “a wonderful job” and welcomed fans’ warm reception of the new drummer, but he reiterated lightly but firmly that “there’s no one that can replace me.” His remarks, brimming with jest and self-assurance,  resonated with fans aware of his signature personality

Nicko McBrain retired from Iron Maiden touring on December 7, 2024, concluding his final live performance at Allianz Parque in São Paulo, Brazil. Though stepping away from the road, he remains a part of the band for future studio work and projects

Following his retirement, longtime bandmate Bruce Dickinson paid tribute during that final show, highlighting McBrain’s forty-two-year tenure and influence. He emphasized that although McBrain would no longer be touring, the drummer remains a valued member of the Maiden family

The decision followed a serious health challenge. In January 2023, McBrain suffered a stroke that left him with partial paralysis on his right side. He later described the recovery process as arduous, involving intensive therapy, strength training, and stretching routines. Despite these hurdles, he returned to complete the tour before announcing his intention to step back from the demands of full-time touring

McBrain’s departure ushered in a new era British Lion’s Simon Dawson became the band’s touring drummer for the ongoing Run For Your Lives world tour which began in May 2025 focusing on the band’s first nine studio albums Fans and critics alike have noted the transition with some reviews remarking on how McBrain’s stroke had affected live performances in 2024 sparking discussion about the timing of the drummer’s replacement

Through it all, McBrain remains resolute in his identity. He acknowledged Dawson’s efforts and expressed gratitude toward the fans. The statement delivered with affection underscored his belief in a legacy built over more than four decades of drumming excellence

For now, Iron Maiden’s rhythm section has shifted, but the drummer who defined their sound during some of metal’s most iconic chapters insists that his presence remains unmatched. The baton has passed, but in McBrain’s eyes, the groove he laid down still echoes
