The stage is set in Steubenville, Ohio, for a night dedicated entirely to rhythm. On May 3, local drummers will take center stage at the Spot Bar for the return of the Rhythm Rumble, a head-to-head drumming competition that has become a unique fixture in the region’s music calendar.

Organized by drummer and music educator Rick Pastre, the event is equal parts performance and celebration. It brings together percussionists from various backgrounds and styles for a friendly competition where technique, creativity, and showmanship are all on display. Unlike traditional battles of the bands, the Rhythm Rumble strips the spotlight down to one element: the drum kit.

This year’s event will once again feature eight local drummers going stick-to-stick in a bracket-style faceoff. Each participant is given a short time slot to perform solo, using their own drum set or the house kit, depending on preference. Judges evaluate the performances based not just on speed or volume, but on originality, musicality, and how well each drummer engages the audience.

The idea behind the Rhythm Rumble, according to Pastre, is to shine a light on an aspect of musicianship that often goes overlooked. “Drummers are usually in the back,” he explained in an earlier interview. “This gives them a chance to be out front and show what they can really do.”

Pastre has been involved in organizing the event since its inception, and he’s known in the region for his dedication to developing young talent. He also runs a drum studio in Wintersville, and many of the competitors have come through his program over the years. That continuity brings a mentorship aspect to the event, even amid the spirited competition.

In past editions, Rhythm Rumble has drawn a crowd that includes fellow musicians, music educators, students, and curious onlookers. For a town with a deep appreciation for live music and community events, the Rumble stands out as a chance to appreciate the craft of drumming in its purest form.

Although only one drummer will walk away with the top honors, the spirit of the event is more collaborative than cutthroat. Many of the participants know each other, and the atmosphere tends to blur the line between contest and concert. It’s loud, it’s unpredictable, and it’s all about the beat.

The 2025 Rhythm Rumble takes place May 3 at the Spot Bar in Steubenville, Ohio.
