Drummers don’t always match the wild, loud image people expect. Actually, many of the best drummers in music today are introverts. They’re not drawn to the stage for attention. They’re drawn to rhythm, focus, and the simple act of playing drums.
For introverts, learning an instrument can be the perfect outlet. It gives them a way to express themselves without having to stand in the center of the room or compete for attention. Drumming is especially suited for this because it’s both physical and meditative. It lets players get lost in patterns and repetition, fully focused on the moment.
Drums are actually the perfect instrument for introverts. So if you feel a bit like you don’t want to outshine the rest of the band, you might be able to become a great drummer for that exact reason.
Take a look at this interesting video from another musician discussing how introversion can hold you back from musical creativity:
Here are a few ways to combat this:
- Accept that you don’t have to impress anyone else
Especially as a drummer, you really don’t need to impress the audience. Your job – in most situations – is to stay locked into the music, the groove, and drive the band forward. Perfect for an introverted person, right?
- Don’t be afraid to express yourself
Unlike other instruments where you need to be a bit more front and center, both bass guitar and drums can be a great alternative to this. You get to “hide” behind the often front-facing instruments and be the “glue” that holds the band together.
This gives you a safe zone to express yourself, even if you don’t like to be the center of attention.
- Practice stepping out of your comfort zone
If you consider yourself an introvert, it doesn’t mean you should be denied the luxury of creativity. There are thousands of talented, high-quality artists who are considered massive introverts. This should not stop you from expressing yourself on the kit, or any other instrument for that matter.
So if you’re struggling with music or creativity due to being introverted, give the drums a try. It might be a perfect outlet to let your expression out.
