New York-based drummer and composer Ches Smith has released two new recordings in quick succession, expanding his catalog of exploratory music. The two projects, The Self and Clone Row, were released one month apart and highlight different aspects of Smith’s creative practice.
The Self, issued through John Zorn’s Tzadik label, is a solo percussion album recorded across two sessions. The album features Smith performing without overdubs or written scores. Using instruments such as glockenspiel, timpani, vibraphone, and tam-tam, he creates layered sound cycles in real-time. The approach emphasizes listening and interaction with the instruments, rather than technical display. The result is a recording that captures the raw process of sound exploration in the moment.

Ches Smith recorded The Self alone, with no pre-arranged material. Each piece unfolds in real-time, relying on instinct and reaction. The album focuses on percussive texture and tone, offering listeners a direct window into Smith’s solo performance approach.
One month later, Smith followed The Self with Clone Row, a full-band release. Unlike the solo record, Clone Row features a quartet. Joining Smith are guitarists Mary Halvorson and Liberty Ellman, along with bassist Nick Dunston. The group performs original compositions by Smith that blend tight rhythmic structures with improvisational freedom.
Clone Row combines acoustic instruments with electronics. The pieces involve shifting grooves, layered harmonies, and interlocking guitar lines. Smith leads the ensemble from the drum kit while leaving space for interaction among the players. The album presents a contrast to The Self, emphasizing collaborative performance and structured ensemble writing.
Ches Smith has a history of working across different musical settings, including jazz, experimental rock, chamber music, and Afro-Caribbean rhythms. These two new releases continue that trajectory, highlighting his current focus on both solo exploration and group composition.
Both projects received attention in the experimental and jazz communities for their range and scope. Smith has said that he plans to continue working in both solo and group formats without limiting his focus to a specific style or genre.
The Self and Clone Row are available now on digital platforms and through physical releases. Smith has not yet announced tour plans related to either project.
