I would go thin Maple or even better.. Birch toms Maple kick.. thin is 5mm, medium is 6mm and the Prolite/SQ2 Vintage shell is 4mm with 2mm rings. .. Kicks you can only get vintage, medium or heavy.
No benefit sonically on going with SQ2 Vintage...
They also offer it on their Starclassic Bubinga

Well when they were brand new I don't think they were anywhere near being cheap.. I think they were low to mid 2k for 3 drums, but also they were more like Delite/Prolite level with the hardware so probably not a fair metric with SQ2.
Here is a used one with some extras that sold recently...
sure that is fine.. you like the more low key stuff and there is nothing wrong with that.
however if you have been monitoring coverage on the PJ drummers for a long, long time on YT and especially just going over the comments all over the place .. Dave A. is by far the favored drummer...
well it is current Sonor "heavy" shell but it is not really uber thick or anything.. Phonic was 10 to 11 mm with much more metal attached to the shell plus no suspension.
I am pretty sure those are the thicker 8mm shells.
You can see on this Sound Pure listing they had all the info direct from Sonor at the very bottom of the page and the 8mm is listed there.
