About Bronze Snares

I wonder if most bronze shells are B8 or B20? I seem to remember those Paiste and Zildjian drums. The Paiste should be somewhere between B8 and B15, while the Zildjian is their B20 bell bronze.

I've played one of those 90s COB's, and I think that a Black Beauty blows the doors off of the chrome plated version. There's some kind of witchcraft with the black nickel that makes the tone fuller and the fundamental pitch lower to my ear.
That was my thought after trying them back to back, too.

I agree with you Winston - I have owned 5” and 6.5” COB snares from Ludwig and I far prefer the Black beauties . John Aldridge told
me the plating on the COB snares was too thick to engrave . The black nickel plating Ludwig did on the BB snares till July 2020 was easy to engrave . The current Black Beauties cannot be engraved .

I am lucky to have sampled and own a couple of cast drums they are amazing and exquisite. I've owned a DW collectors cast 14x5 since 1998 and over the years have added a Duluth 14x6.5, DW 14x5 True Cast and Zildjian 400th and even though they are all similar the Zildjian has the biggest difference in tone.

Do you need one, no but should you treat yourself to a cast drum..... Absolutely!

I’ll do that as soon as I’m offered a stadium tour for more than $2000 a week.

;)

I built my Duluth for a total of $1500AUD so compared to other cast shells it was a bargain and sounds HUGE!
