    Gretsch Polished Copper 14” x 6.5” - thoughts?

I haven’t heard much about this drum as other brand’s copper shells seem to get more glory. Does anyone have experience with it? Just curious! Thanks.

    New mid-level Hi hat help - Tama HH205 vs. HH605 vs. Gibraltar 6707 ?

It’s really hard to photograph chrome but here’s the best I can do. It’s not all over. In real life the stand looks great and works really well. I didn’t have time to get a replacement and it’s fine. It was a bargain and a much better stand than I thought my budget would allow!

    New mid-level Hi hat help - Tama HH205 vs. HH605 vs. Gibraltar 6707 ?

The Tama came in the post today and while it’s great for £90 the Gibraltar 6707 is a level up, so at £80 new (it’s usually £140) it’s a no brainer. It’s a little heavier with larger tubing and a slightly larger footprint, but not so much that it’ll be a problem for my needs. Also, the...

    Quiet kits..

A great/cheap way of reducing your volume is to hold your sticks a bit further towards the tip than you would usually. This cuts down the possible range of movement of the stick so it’s easier to control - you can play softly but in a way that feels more natural. Another way to go is to get...

    New mid-level Hi hat help - Tama HH205 vs. HH605 vs. Gibraltar 6707 ?

Thanks everyone. I’m going to trial the Tama 205 against the Gibraltar 6707 as they are about the same price new. The Gibraltar is on a big discount so it should be much better than the Tama … but I’m just a bit worried about the extra weight for minimal gain. Doesn’t hardware seem so much...

    New mid-level Hi hat help - Tama HH205 vs. HH605 vs. Gibraltar 6707 ?

Hi - I’m in the market for something sturdy and reliable but not too expensive, £150 being the top end of my budget. I don’t wail on my hats but do need it robust enough not to fly across the room! Tama have always seemed good value and I’m wondering if the HH205 is really that much different...

    Fluffy beater?

I used to use a wool beater but it felt totally different to my normal beater so I made a really cheap solution from a bit of elastic and a wooly cleaning mitten (I also put a scrap of leather in the other side so I’ve an in between sound). Works a treat : )

How to make better drum parts?

It’s great that you’ve identified that too much complexity is making you mess up. That’s fine when you’re practicing on your own, but not helpful when playing with a band. So the first thing to do is resist the desire to impress other drummers and focus on playing to a level that makes the band...

Which 20” crashable ride - Sabian Artisan OR Meinl Foundry Reserve?

I’m after a crashable 20" ride for a one cymbal set up. I've been homing in on the sound profile of these two cymbals from YouTube but that's no substitute for people's real experience. Does anyone have first hand knowledge of either/both, especially thinking from the perspective of one cymbal...

Which would you choose for a bass drum - extra width or extra length?

Which bass drum is beefier - 18” x 16” Ludwig Classic Maple or 20” x 12” DW Frequent Flier??? I’m looking to make a drum kit I can stand and play (I’m lead singer & drummer). Given where I want the snare I can’t go deeper than a 20” drum, so I’m wondering… …I’m currently playing a converted...

Help me make an 18" floor tom the biggest sounding bass drum possible

I know there will be a limit on what can be achieved (my other bass drum is a 26"!) but I wonder if people had any tips. Are there any fancy head combinations that bring out the bass (and do bass drum heads with a deeper collar work on toms)? Do risers help, or even particular bass drum beaters...

Looking for a smoother china cymbal

Check out the Sabian 22” HHX Wide Lip China - it’s not around for long and is very expensive but sounds great in the YouTube clips!

Looking for a smoother china cymbal

Sabian’s HHX Zen China is the smoothest I’ve heard. And if you are open to trashy non-China options, look at the Zildjian K Custom Smash Trash and Sabian Evolution O-Zones (the other O-Zone models are more abrasive)

Want to make your pedal feel lighter in an instant?

That’s not just any Sonor tape, that’s ‘Benny Greb Sand StrapTM’ (it’s 2.75mm thick - the perfect balance between the power of 2.5mm tape and the lightness of 3mm tape)!

Want to make your pedal feel lighter in an instant?

My point is that by making the cam radius greater - no matter what the cam shape is or whether it’s strap or chain - you can make a big change in the pedal feel at minimal cost : )

Want to make your pedal feel lighter in an instant?

The chain is still connected to the cam and the pedal as standard, so it can’t pull to one side or the other and come off (as long as (a) there isn’t a lot of play in those connections or the footboard hinge, and (b) it isn’t a chain and sprocket design like the old Camcos - that would be a...

Want to make your pedal feel lighter in an instant?

I hope this helps - a small strip that follows the shape of the cam, so it doesn’t really change the profile, it just changes the leverage.

Want to make your pedal feel lighter in an instant?

I’ve been going down a cam geometry rabbit hole, and based on the logic that the larger the cam radius the lighter the pedal, I’ve had a revelation: Cover your cam with a strip of 3mm thick pvc rubber. If that’s doesn’t feel light enough, put on another layer. It’s ridiculously cheap stuff...
