INTRODUCTIONS: Please Use This Thread To Introduce Yourself!

Hi all,

Happy to be here. Longtime lurker. After a long hiatus playing other instruments (and mostly not having the room for my own drums), I am now in the position of having room for a kit again. I've been keeping my rudimental chops up on a parade snare and practice pads. I play a lot of Brazilian pandeiro and triangle with some of my groups. A great friend of mine has kept my drumset at his house since I moved to NYC way back in 2004. I just got my kit back last week, the same week my new baby boy was born! Needless to say everything is still in boxes. In a couple weeks I hope to ferry everything over to my rehearsal space and do some practicing.

Real name? Brad
Age? 45
How long have you been playing? My first instrument was trumpet but I switched to drums when I was 11 years old.
Origin of user name? Lycosa is a genus of wolf spider, a most fascinating creature.
Your top 5 drummers? Joe Morello, Paul Wertico, JR Robinson, Vinnie Colaiuta, Jim Keltner
Make of drumkit? I started on a Pearl Export. I had a beautiful 7-piece Yamaha Maple Custom for a long time. I now play a vintage 1965 Ludwig Downbeat kit.
Make of cymbal? Bosphorus, Istanbul Mehmet, Paiste, Ibrahim Diril, Zildjian
Where do you practice? I play rudimental snare at home and I now have a communal rehearsal space for my drum kit
Are you in a band? I play upright and electric bass, guitar, mandolin, accordion, and percussion in four groups currently
Do you play covers or originals? One band is all original music. The others are a mix.
What style of music? Jazz, choro, samba, bossa nova, forro, Americana, folk rock, old country
Favourite take out food? Street tacos
What country do you live in? United States of America
One really odd fact about yourself? Not sure it's odd but I am a ham radio operator, currently General Class but studying for my Amateur Extra. I can also fly four-line stunt kites.
How did you start drumming? After another one of many moves as a child, I started school a bit late one semester. I was not getting along with the trumpet, not having a private teacher, and the only opening the school had was in percussion. I started on Alfred Book 1 or some such, with a practice pad and two enormous Ludwig marching drum sticks. I took to it immediately and within a year I was studying marimba and drum set with private teachers.

yep...welcome!!! Usually when guys have a baby, they say goodbye to their sets!!! You are lucky to be getting both!!!!

you started out much like I did...minus the trumpet! I still have my slanted, square, wooden pad and Ludwig marching sticks!!!

Hey,

Nathan here from the San Francisco Bay Area. I'm in my 50's and just bought my first kit—a Ludwig Classic Maple w/ a Black Beaut & a Supraphonic—for my recording studio (and for me to learn). Still working on choosing cymbals. I'm a guitarist and keyboardist and am stoked to be finally getting into drums (wish me luck).

Hey Nathan, I'm also a guitar player/lead singer who came to drums pretty late in the game.

You'll see, it's real fun and rewarding at first because it's fairly easy to sound half-decent pretty fast on a few simple beats.

But then you'll get how much work and repetition it takes to take you from half-decent to "actually good" and man you'll have a new found respect for every drummer you've ever worked with!!!

I know I did ;-) Your mileage may vary though.

Anyhoo welcome here and congrats on the Ludwigs.

Haha, I'm 100% sure you're right. I watch a fair amount of YT drum videos and am some of them are 🤯

Thanks & thanks!

Welcome to the forum, I hope drumming brings you much joy.

If you haven't, maybe check this expansions for your Roland kit:

Happy drumming!

welcome to the forum!!! Glad you got an in person teacher...that will help you avoid many bad habits that new drummers sometimes acquire that can hinder progress as you go!!

what kind of music are you playing along too/learning?

Hello, I am a young drummer in Canada who hasn't been doing many gigs besides church and youth, etc. I have played some free live things for the town, which is fun. Let's go to the interesting stuff lol; my drum kit is a Tama star classic birch performer from 2004, with a pearl 1978 all-original COB Jupiter(Copeland snare-die cast hoop on top); I have a second kit(1982 Tama Royalstars, four pieces with taye floor tom) which I'm currently trying to sell which is a 1982 Royalstar kit. This Summer, I plan to do a one-off fun gig with a fantastic singer too. Oh yeah, my favourite drummers are Stewart Copeland, Neil Peart, Buddy Rich, and Greyson Nekruitman, Keith moon, Simon Phillips Hopefully, this made sense, or this was interesting lol

Welcome.

(not a Jupiter, but annoyingly it is commonly referred to one. It is actually a Pearl Custom (Deluxe). I own the same one. Nice!
