Hi everyone.
My name is Ken and I'm 74 and live in Norfolk England. I've never played a drum kit as it wasn't feasible to have one at home. I play the guitar but have always had a great feel in my head for drumming and it helps as I'm in a Sea Shanty band and sometimes use a Meini Bass box whilst playing my guitar. I want to build my own as it looks easy. I noticed a video on YouTube of a chap with a small video camera looking inside the box and noticed there were some black strips under the beating side and he decided to put some loose sound proofing rubber loose inside. Would that make it sound better

Welcome home!!!!

it depends on the sound you are going for. Personally, I put no muffling on any of my drums. I play mostly metal, punk, and heavy rock stuff, but also play jazz and some country. I use heads that dry up the sound a bit (Remo CS Black Dots on toms; Coated Ambassador on snare), but in my situations, that muffled, thuddy sound is very limiting. If I am at a certain gig, or venue, and they need less ring, I add Moongel pads to the head, but my tuning scheme and head choice prevent me from needing to over muffle the drums.

It is really a personal thing though. And what styles you mostly play to...

Welcome! I own a Meinl Bass Box and I am not sure why they added the rubber, likely for tone/dampening. Not sure it is necessary. I own three Cajons and they do not use any dampening. I haven't done it, but many of my friends have used a Cajon as a kick/bass drum. I suggest building a bass box replica first without the rubber strips and then adding some strips or dampening if you do not get the sound you want.

The thickness and type of wood will make a big difference on the sound you get.
