I am not a recording engineer, but these are my thoughts. I think realistic could mean two things when talking about the snare drum sound. What we hear as a drummer sitting behind the snare drum OR what someone hears sitting in front of the snare. No manipulation of sound. No mics. Just the raw...
Someone just posted this pic of the credits at the end of Superman (Man of Steel) 2013. I see many familiar names including several LA based drummers there.
Edit: I mistakenly assumed that these are the credits for the 2025 movie. I have corrected this mistake and I have updated the thread...
Rick Dior posted this clip. I found it very informative and decided to share.
There is too much material in this clip for me to unpack. I need to watch it again.
I think this is a very interesting concept to combine the best of black Nickel on Brass (Ludwig Black Beauty) and the Bell Brass (TAMA's Terminator) thick 3.0 mm shell into one. This is the Gretsch 6.5x 14 Black Nickel Over Bell Brass which is exclusive to Sweetwater. The listed price for a Bell...
Interview with Andy Zildjian, CEO of Sabian Cymbals. I listened to parts of the interview that I was interested in.
This is the part where they discuss the state of the drum industry. Very interesting section.
I have three questions. Thanks for all the responses in advance.
1) I read somewhere that the "Syncopation" book, along with "Stick Control" and "Accents and Rebounds" are considered the core trio books for drum students. I am certain there are other fine books out there, but it seems like...

Last night I was watching the "Wrecking Crew" documentary. They mentioned that the recording industry was originally centered in New York City. However at the time that the "Wrecking Crew" session musicians were active, it moved to Los Angeles.
Where is the center of the recording industry...
I searched and so far I did not find a thread covering the subject. If there is one, please leave a comment.
Who are the famous musician's favorite drummers?
I start by quoting the bass player, Leland Sklar.
I am at the end of this part of my sound journey. As some of you who read the forum are aware, a while back I went on a sound journey with low cost steel snare drums. I have finally settled on these two snares that I plan to keep.
First in line is the one and the only Ludwig 6.5x14 Supralite...
I am watching this as we speak. It is a very interesting discussion specially for those of us late bloomers who are going back to school.
David Garibaldi, Bill Gibson, and Henrique De Almeida with host John De Christopher.
Edit: Oh well, the clip went away. It is private now.:(
What is your criteria for changing older coated drum heads before heading out for a live gig?
I was listening to a clip a few months back, and they mentioned that when the coating starts to come off, then that is the time to play it safe and change the drum head before a live gig.
I attended a performance by the long time Santana singer Tony Lindsay yesterday. The drummer in his band was using the Swiss cymbal for ride. Maybe this is not something new, but it is a new setup for me which I have not seen before.
Since the tunes were all Funk, Soul, and Blues the drummer...
Any rhythm that drives with the weak limb seems to be in this category.
Samba seems to be using the doubles on the right foot instead of the right hand to drive the rhythm.
Shuffle seems to drive the rhythm with the doubles on the weak left hand with hi-hat and bass drum beats coordinated on...
