Hey all, was looking online for a drum forum related to metal. Not sure if this is the place or not but it's what popped up and I will certainly have a look around.

Just an introduction suppose. I am a guitarist, have played drums off and on my whole life but a lifetime ago I was in a band that started doing well and just stuck to guitar. I regret not sticking with drums because......good luck finding an amazing drummer for your band and guitarists are a dime a dozen lol.

After a VERY long hiatus I've decided to get back into drumming. It's fun, I want to do something with my extra time, get into better shape and my friends want me to play with them. My skill level seems to be an ok fit for the music they want to play, which I do enjoy doing drums for. Although I definitely need to improve a lot.

My weakness has always been my feet, there was a point 20 years ago where I would have considered myself decent but it's hard to get back to that. I got myself a pair of speed cobra 910 with a trick shaft. Not sure if that was the best choice or not but I will give them a good run and possibly upgrade to the acd direct drive kit.

My personal goal is to build the stamina to get through a full set with ease and to just get the chops needed but also very keen on mastering blasting and 200+bpm 16ths. That along with not ruining my muscle memory and still being able to play slow as well.

I can successfully do the 16ths but not for very long at all. I personally feel that other than simply practicing the biggest hurdle is going to be figuring out the proper pedal settings.

Hoping to find some general technique and gear tips along with some cool discussions on here because I'm all in with it.

Extremely long post I suppose. Here is a low quality cell phone clip of the first song we're working on after about 3 sessions so far. It is a bit rough, go easy lol.

Hello, Maddnotez I heard about your introduction story my name is Tony Ivanov, I'm also a drummer and playing other instruments including guitar and piano, I started playing drums a few years ago and I fell in love with it, then I getting to realize that I feel overweight but I decide to lose weight by exercising every single year, then after my drumming hiatus I got back into it in 2018 and still doing it to this day, because I have ADHD Autism Disorder:
Autism, known clinically as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by differences and difficulties in social communication and interaction, a need for predictability, sensory processing differences, focused interests, and repetitive behaviors such as stimming. Formal diagnosis requires significant challenges in multiple domains of life, with characteristics that are atypical or more pronounced than expected for one's age and sociocultural context. Motor coordination difficulties are common but not required for diagnosis. Autism is a spectrum, resulting in wide variations in presentation and support needs among autistic people. For example, some are non-speaking, while others use spoken language fluently.

The view of autism as a disorder has been challenged by the neurodiversity paradigm, which frames autistic traits as a healthy variation of the human condition. This view is supported by the autism rights movement and a growing number of researchers. The neurodiversity framework has sparked significant debate among autistic people, advocacy groups, healthcare providers, and charities.

Increased estimates of autism prevalence since the 1990s are primarily attributed to broader criteria and increased awareness, although a true rise in prevalence is possible. The World Health Organization estimates about 1 in 100 children were diagnosed between 2012 and 2021, noting an increasing trend. This rise has fueled anti-vaccine activists' disproven claim that vaccines cause autism. While precise causes are mostly unknown, research shows that autism is highly heritable and polygenic. Environmental factors play a relatively small role, mainly prenatally. Boys are diagnosed significantly more often than girls. Autism frequently co-occurs with ADHD, epilepsy, and intellectual disability.

There is no known cure for autism; many in the autistic community oppose the pursuit of one.Interventions such as applied behavior analysis (ABA), speech therapy, and occupational therapy can help autistic people gain self-care, social, and language skills. Guidelines from the CDC and ESCAP endorse ABA, but the NICE cites a lack of high-quality evidence.Concerns also include potential adverse effects and conflicts of interest in research. Additionally, neurodiversity advocates reject it because it aims to make the child appear more neurotypical instead of accepting their neurodivergence. Reducing environmental and social barriers enables autistic people to participate more fully in education, employment, and other aspects of life. Medications can alleviate some co-occurring problems.

It's tough because people are lacking and didn't understand what I said to them but now they do, it's lucky to interact with people, and they are impressed with the way I look the way I talk and get to know each of them, good to have some friends in person in every countries and on Social media platforms.

See you later, we could talk in the conversation someday.
Take Care my friend.

Cheers Tony, appreciate reading your story.

hello @Maddnotez !!! Fellow old school metalhead/punker here.(I'm 55) There are quite a few of us stinking up the place among all of the jazzers and funkers! (I am also a jazzer - it is actually where I started playing drums....).

Started my metal journey in the early 80's with Maiden, Ozzy, Dio, and then also the very fresh progressive metal scene with Queensryche and Fates Warning. Also the early thrash stuff, first wave of black metal, and the DC hardcore punk scene. Would come home from school, put metal albums on, and play along for hours and hours.

If the music was short, fast, and loud, I was into it. Still am!!! Also started playing bass back then, thanks to the influence of Geddy Lee and Steve Harris, and ended playing bass in most of the metal bands I was in (because no one else played bass).

I also never really developed fast feet because of palying bass, or when I did play drums, it was more in hardcore punk bands...lots of D-beat stuff...because i had really fast hands - thanks to marching band/drum corps stuff I did.

So anywho, in my 40's, I started getting the urge to work on my double bass stuff. I could do short burts, and groove playing - along the lines of "Herb" Alexander of Primus, but not the straight forward stuff like Charlie Benante or Dave Lombardo. I could play bass to all of that fast stuff, but not drums.

So to develop that kind of endurance based speed, I started doing some of the hand exercises I did for marching band, but with my feet. Always starting at mid-slow tempos (90-100bpm) to develop and identify technique, balance, and muscle group usage, and then slowly adding speed. I get to thresholds in my technique - usually due to muscle weakness, or using the wrong muscle groups to execute a certain tempo, and then I have to add on new techniques. With my normal heel up playing I do for all other styles, I can get 16ths up to about 140 for lengths of time. After that, I have been trying to do ankle swivel to go faster.

Who are your favorite bands/biggest influences etc?

My top 5 favorite bands/biggest influences are;
1. Rush - Neil and Geddy
2. Iron Maiden - Clive, Nicko and Steve
3. Fates Warning - Mark Zonder and Joe Dibiase
4. Minor Theat - Jeff Nelson and Brian Baker
5. Queesnryche - Scott Rockenfield and Eddie Jackson

if you want, check out the latest metal project I was with (we are sort of on hiatus right now due to medical issues with me and our singer [ we are both old and fat!!])

The Dead Scene - I am playing bass in this group...

Pretty cool and thanks for the tips. Good songs and great bass tone there!! @Xstr8edgtnrdrmrX

I listen to various metal bands, mostly extreme or brutal metal. Cryptopsy, Suffocation and despised icon are some of my favorites. As far as black metal, I like old Dimmu, The Legion, dont know a ton of those bands.

Was into a lot of hardcore bands growing up, mostly east coast bands where I grew up like Merauder, Madball, sick of it all. Definitely liked bad brains from DC I think.

I do listen to a lot of other stuff too like 90s Alternative or Classic Rock.

As far as guitar, I play death metal. Here's my most recent stuff.

For drums, I would love to get to the level of being able to play that but that's going to take a lot of practice and time lol. The guys I'm playing drums with are into the newer beatdown type of hardcore I guess you call it which is good. It's much easier to play and I still like the music.

I guess the Drummer from Bodysnatcher is where I would like to be for that but again, that's going to take a lot of work and practice. I think we will be jamming twice a week or so and I usually work from home so I can get some reps in.

At my age of 44 I'm out of shape, my knees are feeling it as well as my muscles. I dont want to overdo it so I try to take breaks and some days don't play at all so I can rest. I have a crappy e kit here to use and my guitar buddy has a decent sounding mapex kit I play on for now.

Im rambling at this point but thanks again for the info.

i definitely hear the old school death influence in that song!!! Which is good. Morbid Angel, Deicide, Nocturnus...reminds me of that for sure.

at our age, it is definitely about getting the right kind of reps in to avoid damage the next day. That is one of the reasons I start slow first. Luckily for me, the sports i did as a kid were very "knee friendly" and built lots of leg stregnth <--- hockey and BMX biking. Still ride BMX. I think this gives me an edge here later on in life b/c I don't experience the same issues as my freinds who played football

and if you have that much time to rep, you should develop some good feel and endurance after a while

Yeah, although I want to be able to play extremely fast I'm not neglecting slower stuff and training.

When i first got my pedals I went right to 200BP 16th practice and within a couple of days realized it's going to hinder my slow playing so I'm trying to work all over the spectrum.
