He had me do some uber-quiet singles at 40 bpm. Playing about 1 inch above the head and no "wind up". Just a tap and back to 1 inch. That was something....Just curious, how slow are super slow singles. I hear of learning about stick height and velocity this way.
Afterwards we did Four on a hand, then the other hand, then 8/8 then 16/16, back to 8/8 back to 4/4. Start at 40 (1/4 notes) do as many cycle as it takes for things to be smooth and even, then slowly ramp up the tempo in 5 bpm increments. When you reach the point where it falls appart, back up to the last comfortable point and hold it there for 10-15 mins.
Those two very simple exercises have helped my playing way more than anything I've done before.
