Solving Paiste for jazz

"You don't really want a flat ride do you?" šŸ˜†

View attachment 150291

I took an 18" 602 flat on a little tour and it would make this godawful obnoxious squeal if I played it too hard. I can't use them.
That was one a very active Pittsburgh drummer chose..
That flap actually didn't affect and may've lowered the pitch... It was a gem to play and still sounded good.

It was an 18" around 1787g. I'm not kidding

the other he chose was a 22" with an equal Flap in it. Still sounded good maybe more interesting than stock.
One he didn't take or missed was a 19" with a chunk out. I keep that one as it fits in it's a 19" at 2012g with a triangle edge cut out. It's a jazz cymbal can do the job It can sound Blue Note. On the high frosty side but can do a Higgins.

The history of famous pro drummers using cymbals with chunks out is vast. You should know that : )

I in 2020 bought 9 vintage 602 all had a little chippy on them.
Bought knowing that on purpose (cheap...)
So I enjoyed my revisiting of Paistes
Went out with a Chip

Still have 3-14s 1-18 1-19 and 1-18 China
22" with a flap and 18" Flat with a Flap sold to a local pro drummer
who auditioned them in person
Oh man, Seven Sound China is cool! Doesn’t turn up often with the vintage dealers. I have some saved Seven Sound searches. Still have Blue Labels in my head from the mid 80s. Don’t think the ink color changes the sound but with the used market price maybe some think they do.

You got another thing coming 😁

this one an 18" ps 602- previous owner cut in too far or someone previous let crack grow in too far.. It's sadly

Paiste19 005.JPG

a "mess of lows"..

Ok let's get em all pictured my jazz Paiste stock..
the 18" Seven Sound Set China ( the lone one with a serial-1978 year)

Paiste19 006.JPG

interesting story here. I bought this off ebay from a relative of Curt Cress

Paiste19 007.JPG

(of Passport) He was in concert busted it and handed it to the person I bought it from

Plays fine fantastically; still haven't decided on final solution to top (winging it down with felts is acceptable)
1978 serial 7 Sound Set no. 6 18"
sweet in it's Paiste Alpy way.

Oh man, you should have taken the Paiste cache to Nodar Rode in his day. He would have had you fixed up with all sorts of nuts and bolts and washers and brackets and grommets to keep those things together.

This has got me thinking, if I really wanna get out there, I need to haul out my 24ā€ Paiste/Trixon Stambul and see what it wants to do.

Yessir, good stuff. Love to hear Pat playing the blues. Billy on the Alps! Paiste ad from the era says he was running two 602 rides and two Signature rides!

I wouldn’t say anything has steered me away from the Masters, , but nothing yet has led me to them. I love my Masters swish and it is a lifetime keeper. I’m at least 8 hours drive from a shop that would even have a Masters cymbal so I am relegated to online. I bought two other Masters that I didn’t keep. Wasn’t thinking of them in a trad jazz context, more of a fusion/funk context. Both were ā€œ20, a Dark ride and a Dark crash. They seemed like they wanted to hang with my Ks but couldn’t quite speak the language. Like a K wearing a Paiste Halloween costume maybe. Just didn’t do it for me. The Masters I keep hearing that I want to try next is the Dry ride. Every time I hear a vid of someone playing one of those I think that is a sound I could hang with. What models are you using?

My other factor is that I own about 40 Signatures/Giant Beat/602/a few others so I wanted to see what I could put together with existing inventory.
Ah, I understand. I am not a fan of Ks mostly because of the gongy quality that almost all of them seem to posses, but they are a classic for a reason.

As for my Masters, I play:
16' Masters thin hats or 15" Masters dark hi hats
20" Masters thin or 20" Masters Dark crash/ride (for louder situations)
24" Masters Deep Ride
22" Masters thin

For me, they work in almost every musical situation I would play. They have enough oomph to work on medium loud bands, which is what I typically find myself playing in.

Great post. For fusion/funk, I usually stick to my Paiste Signatures: 13 heavy hats (what Stewart Copeland used before his 12 combo crisp hats), fast crashes, and 21 Signature Dry Heavy Ride. Those cymbals help me channel some Chad Wackerman-style fusion sounds.

he's a leader reminds me of Jack DeJohnette 's playing in his prime..
Bravo.

Oh man, I enjoyed that. He is pushing through and finding some new stuff in those tunes. As JDA said, like Dejohnette would do.

Looks like a 602 flat, Masters Dry and a Masters crash with an inverted splash. Can’t see the hats. Canopus sounds great. Love how he has the brushes precariously perched on the edge of the floor tom. Gotta get into this dude more. Other cats are jammin also.

That's right, I think. He uses 602 Classic medium hats (14), Masters Dark ride and Crash/Ride, Masters Dry Ride, 602 flat, and a Masters crash. I think he also has Masters hats (14).

That DeJohnette comparison is a good one regarding cymbals, too, because DeJohnette's signature Sabians were always more piercing/bright than dark/complex, which is more a Paiste sound.

or even the many years prior when he was a Paiste endorsee give Gateway lp a listen.
(It was more the notes and note placements that reminded me of JackD
