Worst setup of gear you've owned

Wish I'd have made an offer for that 20" brilliant earth ride.

Some of those early heavy Zildjians, the Earth, Rock & Ping rides were amazing, heavy but still musical (late 70s/early 80s) the latter offerings not so much
I always remember Rob Heaton's (New Model Army) Earth Ride as the best I'd heard, I think he referred to it as a Viking shield!

My first kit was technically the worst. Maxtone drums in sizes that were so big for a 13 year old that my rack toms were basically vertical, a bass drum pedal that the beater flew out of all the time and hihats and a crash cymbal that inverted from being hit after 10 minutes. But, it was my pride and joy at the time.

You can't knock your first kit especially if it's something you had as a kid or learned to play on. My folks got me something similar when I was 4, bass drum, snare and a tom. Their old drummer gave me a load of Zyns.

They're like your first car, the greatest thing ever.

Splash:
Sabian B8 Chinese splash.

Sticks:
Vater sticks. I found a brick of them on sale and gave them a try. Hated the balance of them. I gave a lot of them away.

Snare:
5.5 x 14" vintage Slingerland 6 lug, 3-ply. This one hurts to admit (I'm a BIG vintage Slingerland fan too).
I've still got one of those Sabian B8 Chinese splashes. I haven't played it in over 20 years for a very good reason.

I had a 70s Slingerland metal snare, can't remember the model. Think it was the student one? It was in time capsule condition and came in the molded hard case and had the rubber mute/practice pad. I couldn't get on with it, it wouldn't hold any tuning but looked beautiful.

Now sticks is one I forgot. Anything with grip on them, gives me horrific blisters. Even Regal Tips had this lacquer/varnish on them I had to sand off. I used to love their quantum 9000s.

Early in my drumming career I had some zyn cymbals. They sounded ok to my inexperienced ears.

My drumming journey was very quick, I played my first gig about a month after picking up sticks. Within a couple of years I was playing pretty good gigs in a tribute band. At one gig we were supporting a professional tribute band (a Sex Pistols tribute) and the drummer said something like your drumming is good but get some better cymbals. I soon upgraded!

Probably when I stuck together the first two beginner kits I owned as a kid and got this monstrosity. 2 12" toms, a 13", 2 16" floor toms, one 20" and one 22" bass drum, rototoms, cobbled together hardware, all set up terribly.

but that is every kid from the 70's DREAM kit!!!

My freind and I combined both of our crappy kits to form one huge kit that looked just like that...and played it for hours on end.

We even hung chains on it so it would look just like Scott Rockenfields drum kit from Queesnryche...

we were in heaven

The first two sets of hardware I had were bad, but for different reasons. My first kit was a Blackhawk (no Gretsch branding) from the Sears catalog. The hardware was abysmal. The hihat stand was bendable with bare hands. The boom stand collapsed on stage and the snare stand had a tendency to dump the snare. When I upgraded, I went the complete opposite direction. Gibraltar was new on the market and their top line stuff was ridiculously heavy weight. The bases completely folded out like an umbrella and they were thick and double braced. I could literally stand on them and they wouldn't move. So while my cymbals were rock solid now, my stage footprint had doubled and gear weight trippled.

I don’t think I ever bought anything over $100 that I could rank in my worst gear collection. And certainly not with drums. Everything except a couple of guitar pedals I bought super cheap and a set of Sears hi hats I got when I was 12 has been pretty good, even the stuff that shouldn’t have been any good.

Non-Gretsch Blackhawk survivors unite!
