Post your Gig Pics

No no in overall consumer perception
In fact I thought I spotted John wearing a "DW The Best Reason To Play Drums" T shirt

In fact I'm thinking of getting one made up myself. We all should.

Festival gig on Saturday

Was really good, the organiser had a change around on timings and we were requested to start earlier, so an original hour set was increased to nearly two hours.

Stage lights were so bright that we couldn’t see past the first couple of rows but found the field packed just before we went back on for an encore. Must have been a couple thousand people there.

Out of a busy festival period over the coming weeks this is the one we thought might be a bit hit and miss as our field was a walk away from the main stage area, but it was a great evening

Video of the final number below

This was a lovely gig last night, playing a boat club in York, not far from what used to be the Terry’s chocolate factory (I highly recommend Terry’s chocolate oranges!) which you can see just over the trees.

It means a lot as a musician when people and the venue appreciate you - providing you with a dressing room, food, free drinks. Already looking forward to going back next year.

@PTB

I sold my steel piccolo snare because that cheap 1mm steel shell did not generate a good sound to my ears. The other day, this Ludwig Carl Palmer piccolo snare appeared on my feed.

May I ask what are your thoughts on this Ludwig Carl Palmer Piccolo snare?
How do you like the sound?
Did you encounter any issues with the throw off not disengaging the snare wires or the build quality?
I cannot be 100% sure, but is this snare made in Taiwan and is it a Brass welded shell? I ask because although this is a signature snare, this is one of the lowest priced Ludwig snare drums. Thanks.

Just finished a busy weekend. Friday night I used my '79 Gretsch SSB set (22/13/16) with a 6.5x14 USA Custom snare. Saturday night and Sunday afternoon I used my Ludwig CM Golden Slumbers set with a 6x14 Noble and Cooley cast aluminum snare.

Striker, I love it.

I’ll start by saying I have zero loyalty for drum brands, one of the best sounding kit I’ve ever owned was a cheap entry level Mapex Tornado that had been sat in a kids garage for a few years slowly rusting away. One of the worst I’ve had was a Gretsch Catalina, just never seemed to sound right.

So I don’t go for brands or have any loyalty.

BUT….this is the first drum I’ve ever owned where I’ve decided I love it so much I’m saving up for a second one for safekeeping.

The sound is incredible. A bit of ring to it, so I have a snare weight attached to it. I replaced the heads which I always do, never really a fan of stock heads. Zero issues with the strainer *however* I believe there’s been two models of this snare, the first model had a few issues with the strainer and then they revised it for the second model. I have the second model.

Not sure about brass welded/Taiwan. The only defect I have is it has little screws to in theory keep the lugs locked firmly in place, however if you screw them tight it detunes the lug anyway. I don’t really use them, just keep the screws finger tight and every 5 or so gigs they unscrew.

Happy to send a vid direct to you if you’d like to hear it in action.

The warmth of light as the sun starts to set. Outdoor gig at the local town common.
(BTW, I know, I know - my pile of cables next to the drums looks like a rat's nest)

Did one of those sessions today that checked off two of the three boxes necessary to make it worthwhile.

1. Play with friends/great musicians - ✅
2. Play interesting/enjoyable music - ✅
3. Good money - ❌

Oh well, can’t win ‘em all. :) This was an old school country session for an up and coming Bakersfield kid. Got to pull all my Don Williams deep dive “chops” out. The other cats on the session are good friends and former bandmates so it all went down quick and easy.

Brushes for every song. One waltz, a couple of train beats and another uptempo number. The kid is green - it was his first recording experience, so it was fun watching him light up as we brought his songs to life. I got to use my favorite bass drum recording setup, a RE20 with no front head and a nice wool tartan stadium blanket for muffling.

Not sure why, but my Frequent Flyer home rig seemed like the right choice. Bamboo snare and 602s rounded out the gear. As soon as I get some sounds, I’ll post ‘em. This was a rare opportunity to record with my favorite bass player in town which helped make up for the poor pay. Ha!

I like the placement of the bass cab/amp - It's not blasting into your ear, but I'd think you can hear your counterpart just fine if you don't have monitors or IEMs. Nice!

Cable rat's nest? Good spot for it. I'm right handed, so I almost can't get out from behind the kit on the hi-hat side anyway.

I hope the gig went as smooth as the "stage lighting." :)

Good on ya, Ryan! "Benefit gigs" quite often have a pay-out that can't be measured monetarily.

The memory will stick with you longer than the money would have and your new friend will never forget that session.

I'll never forget my first time playing with real musicians and am forever thankful for the folks who made it possible.

Festival slot last night, taken during setup before they opened the gates

Festival & main stage properly opens today but they held a pre festival party for traders and early campers with us and another band in the big top.

Was fun, even if a bit chaotic (stage still being setup / cabled as we loaded in)

Got a couple of weekend passes from
the promoter, so going back tomorrow as a punter.

Going for something radically different (for me) for the gig tonight. No hats - bass drum, snare drum and one cymbal only, with my congas added in for good measure. I feel like I lean on my hi-hats too much so I’m challenging myself to come up with different ways to drive my grooves.
