Questions for people who play both matched and traditional grip

Quick question regarding #1. Did you initially learn trad grip only? Or have you always played both?

I ask because I am pretty much exactly the opposite. 🤣 Everything comes easily in trad grip, and requires effort in matched.

I’m sorry, I missed your question back when you posted it. To give a late answer…

Yes, I initially learned trad only. I learned on orchestral snare. Matched was a timpani grip.

For years I was a grip snob, & looked down my nose at people who played matched. Then I got a kit, and realised matched made some things easier, so I switched and played mostly matched for a few years.

However, when I picked up the sticks again after a 30 year break, I instinctively went with trad. Go figure :D

Here’s another idea, which is what I do. I have my snare angled slightly toward me for when I play matched, but when I switch to traditional I set the flange of the bottom hoop onto the top of the left snare basket tip. This tilts my snare to the right and slightly away from me, and it only takes seconds.
