What stick taper do you generally prefer?

I was watching some of Rick Dior's videos on sticks. Great source of stick information and drumming in general. Makes great sticks too. He tends to prefer short tapers. From what I understand it's mostly due to the sound on the cymbals he uses. However, others like Mike Johnston and Larnell Lewis prefer long tapers.

I have sticks with short, medium and long taper. I find myself preferring long taper and medium tappered sticks. The long taper can make a larger diameter stick feel more manageable (to me). I have Los Cabos 2b and Promark 2b Rebound Long, both which have long tapers and they're pretty quick for their size.

I think in general I prefer a rear-weighted stick vs a front heavy stick.

My go-to is the VF AJ2. I find the long taper and teardrop tip provide great articulation.

Funny you bring this up, I started a similar thread. I guess I have always used what could be somewhere around a medium or short taper.

I like the longer tapers of the American Jazz series sticks. I’ve been using them for about 8 years now…AJ1, AJ2, and AJ6

I tend to prefer medium tapered sticks.

My regular sticks are Vic Firth American Classic Extreme 5B Nylon, and the American Classic 2B Nylon.

I grew up playing the 2BN's, so their diameter and weight always feel natural to me in my hands. In the last decade or so, I've tried playing/experimenting with the 5B size. I found that I like the extra length and the balance of the Extreme 5BN's as well.

I never really thought about it. I try out sticks, and if they feel OK, I buy them. Peace and goodwill.

Interesting page.... somehow Shaughnessy and Peart having similar sticks does not seem surprising.
