Playing Songs you Can't Stand

Hey y'all...I know this has come up before....

I like MOST of the material in our band...and I KNOW I'll never like all of it, and neither will the other members...

Examples of songs I love to play in our band are:

Don't Change (INXS)
Who Can it Be Now?
Good Times Roll (Cars)
Hungry Like the Wolf
One Thing Leads to Another
Rock the Casbah
Pride (U2)
Surrender (Cheap Trick)
Living After Midnight (Judas Priest)
Just Like Heaven (Cure)
etc..

And then there a bunch I'm OK with playing but don't do much for me

And songs I cannot STAND...that are an *ordeal* to get through...these are the worst two for me

Pump it Up (Elvis Costello)....I HATE this
Save it for Later (Yeah I KNOW this is early MTV...but it's so boring and monotonous...)

Those are the worst two for me...and I've really tried...I've looked at drum covers on YouTube, just trying to find some kind of way to tolerate these two...I can't stand either one...the worst of the two being Save it for Later....even the chord progression is monotonous....

I'm NOT expecting to like every song, and when I play it I think about when I watched the video on MTV as a kid...but does anyone have ANY tips on how to get through as song they cannot stand playing?

And on this topic...what the tunes y'all can't stand playing and how do you get through them?

Thanks

The Rose ( open mike catastrophe )

Ol Time RocknRoll ( ...... )

Sympathy for the Devil ( I aint got none )

I am Woman ( yes, I was in a band like that . Bass player was the singer's boyfriend and he wouldn't make eye contact with the band or else we'd all burst out laughing and he'd be walking home )

Proud Mary ( Tina Turner version . I dont like those drugs that make you thin )

I wouldn't mind playing sympathy for the devil....I used to play Proud Mary, the Tina version in a band around 2000-2003....not one of my favorites back then...

I can relate. To make them palatable, I try to focus on playing the song well, not the fact that I don't like it. I think there will always be songs we don't like. Polish it to get the turn-arounds and tricky parts fluid. If it's the meter or timing, I make sure I'm solid. Play it like I mean it without hesitation, and like I love it. Practice as much as needed to achieve all those things.

Probably the only possible answer, really. Focus on trying to get your time feel to become "infectious" towards the audience and try to get their heads bobbing no matter what.

oh the first two words "English Beat" are a turn off, I shall continue...

I wager no one's ever heard that ..no wait.. I remember that

"Sooner Or Later" how he says 'Lay-ter'..

That's like a Talking Heads Copy cat

"Just pretend you're backing up David Byrne"

At church I have to play many songs that I do not like. The pastor knows this. But I try to play them as good as I can. That is why I started a band called The Praise Guys, so I can play the songs I like. Peace and goodwill.
