Yamaha's Guide to Choosing a Drumset

not one mention of a 14 x 20 kick (bass drum for jazz guys) Unless I missed it.

Look at the US and Euro 60s and 70s catalog outfits. they're still relevant today amen.
Jobbing drummer hasn't really if at all changed that much

a 14x20 8x12 16x16 or 14x14 can be carried in to any establishment without the aid of an 18 wheeler and/or two roadies.

While all of the photos are of Yamaha gear the guide itself is surprisingly in-depth and brand neutral.

Bravo Yamaha!
Indeed. I like how useful it could be for folks like new students, parents or a school educator who may be unfamiliar with the myriad of items in a kit to learn about. If they visit this forum seeking knowledege, this is one more source .

People can choose any brand they wish, Yamaha happened to be the company that presented this guide.

missed out big not including a 20" bass drum

I looked through it and found that it really didn't offer much to help one choose a drum set, but rather went on and on about defining different parts of the kit. Which is indeed helpful for those new to drums/drumming, but based on its title I was expecting something more along the lines of what to look for in a beginner kit, what to look for if you want to play jazz, what to look for if you're a burgeoning rock drummer, etc. So the title is a little misleading, in addition to having some outdated info. And some of the info I found to be kind of wrong, like describing lauan wood as a budget version of birch. Lauan, aka Philippine Mahogany, is more like a budget version of true African mahogany, which has a dark, warm, rounded tone and is pretty much the polar opposite of birch.

What surprised me is they admitted drums that they don’t make sound better e.g stave, segmented, steam bent and solid shell

I actually think they made an error. I believe they always considered the “fusion” setup with a 20” bass. And that they have always considered “standard” to have the 22”. I think it’s an oversight.

On the Yamaha site, the shell pack affiliated with the 10,12,14 toms is the 20 inch bass.

From their site.

3 Shell Pack Options

TMP2F5 (22”x16” bass drum / 16”x15” floor tom / 12”x8” tom tom / 10”x7” tom tom / tom holder [TH945C])

TMP0F5 (20”x15” bass drum / 14”x13” floor tom / 12”x8” tom tom / 10”x7” tom tom / tom holder [TH945C])

TMP8F3 (18"x14" bass drum / 14”x13” floor tom / 12”x8” tom tom / tom clamp [CL945LB])
