Four of the Biggest Drumming Hams on One Stage - Tool, Slipknot, Gojira and Mastodon

I didn't actually think much of the concert from what I saw of it. Fan of many of the bands and a massive Sabbath fan but the mixes for most bands were poor and the Symptom of the Universe drum-off looked pretty badly rehearsed. Danny Carey is leagues ahead of Chad Smith and Travis Barker (who are no slouches).

You can like more than one genre. Just this week I've listened to Death and Masada... @jda What's the appeal of listening to a genre whose most prominent artists have been dead for more than 50 years? To play Devil's Advocate.

For the record, most of my childhood was listening to Beethoven, Shostakovich, Mozart and Debussy, with splashes of Pink Floyd. Brother is a serious Pianist. Still listen to some of it. I can't say I understand much of how it works and the closest I've got to an orchestra is singing choral First Tenor in Handel's Messiah.

To deny the artistry of other genres of music - even ones that you don't understand - is to deny yourself the intellectual rigour to appreciate its creative endeavours. Eventually everything you make becomes derivative and increasingly distanced from originality. Debates around the relative merits of genre are pointless and juvenile.

It is just a bunch of guys wanking on their instruments right?
No isn't at all.
it is not different....just unfamiliar to those who don't familiarize themselves to it.
No they all gathered to pay Homage to Black Sabbath So Black Sabbath was the genesis (no pun) for some of their formations...And I'm saying "they" took of the some Top Line guitar riffs and intensity and made that the entire meal...

How is that different from a Fake Book?

jazz blues some commercial has a nice back beat..

Not sure anyone is stuck on either of those.
What I mean is

"why the angry 8th note pounding guitars?"
What's there to rage about anymore- except for a few isolated incidents and I don't hear a specific rage expressed in the Lyric. If I could discern the Lyric I might understand what the gumbling is about
What's the anger over- I could understand Black Sabbath in 1972- I did- but these 21st century bands carrying it on.
What's the beef? What's the new beef? Same as the old beef? Serious questions

What are they rebeling against?
Go listen to Jinjer from Ukraine. They have plenty of motivation. And skill.

No isn't at all.

but it is...there is as much wankery in jazz...from the very beginning....as there is in any other genre with solos...there is wankery in opera, classical, country, pop....metal is not the only genre with wankery

again, a topic for another thread for sure....

doesn't hit one over the head with it tho.....

there's no gu-gu-gu-gu-gu-gu-- jackhammer repetition
unless that's what one see's when they wake up in a metal world to the blue sky green trees and chirping birds - art reflects life huh.? maybe if there's a jackhammer and sewer drilling outside your window every morning you awake (could happen.

I'd like to hear @Son of Vistalite Black post-show analysis of females in the audience and Subaru's in the Parking lot

Not many Subarus in the UK.

Have you ever considered that you might be a tad close-minded?

Not liking something doesn't mean that you shouldn't appreciate its virtues.

Hey Traci @Tracii thanks for the Rolling Eyes I won't take it personally ok? 😁

No it's a play on words SOVB has used numerous times. Lighten up. I know the English car population

Sorry, I forgot you were the font of wisdom on all Earthly matters.

no I just came in at a time when it was all starting to happen. You know. The youth taking up instruments?
and free to roam

I'm sorry, but I just don't see the point in what you are doing in this thread. You don't like modern metal music and you've got your reasons. Fine. What has that got to do with the topic? Especially as your take seems to be purely negative.

Unless, of course, I'm simply not getting it (not a native English speaker, so some nuances might be lost on me). In that case, please ignore me.

What has that got to do with the topic?
Well I posted I believe the only Vids of the day (in the topic) . Of Sabbath. And the Drum Off. So as a musical event I have some stake in the matter. Did you know I bought every black sabbath album when they were released. The first Four. 3 . I saw them live in 1972. As a sophomore in high school. I was a fan. Part of my musical dna as is that whole era. So I have some perspective on the day the situation and the scene and the discussion if there's to be any. I'm done
Ozzy's set had a keyboard

Hey, JDA Vintage is back!!!
One more. Was they any keyboards at that concert in any of the bands
Yes, Rick Wakeman’s son Adam played them with Ozzy and the super groups when needed.
what 's the motivation behind this style of music - listening to or playing it- I mean once you are past 20 years old ... What is it that makes one hang on to it
Serious question
You’re expecting Judas Priest to do a salute to Tony Bennett? Some people are made for metal, and that’s how it is.

You’d like this Orlando guy I’ve played with a few times Bobby Koeble. Guitarist who is a professor, hosts a weekly jazz jam, does classical solo shows, gypsy jazz, fusion, and plays in the top function band in the area, part jazz, part dance rock and R&B. And every so often, he and a few other ex-members of a highly regarded Florida metal band called Death, whose leader/sole original member died years ago, tour the world as a tribute show.

yes but rage at what
frozen foods? Power windows?
What Rage Rage at what
is it reflected in the lyric
Give me a concrete example of the rage
Or what was the rage that begat the style
I can understand Rage against the norm but aren't the best known names all normies now.
I'll let you in on a little secret. Some weird people actually listen to this stuff not because they're "raging" but because it makes them....dare I say it....happy?? Maybe even joyful?? You want proof just check out the bit where Jason Mamoa jumps into the crowd.

But don't tell anyone 🤫

i am one of those people...

and i have had waaay more "spine tingling" events listenign to metal than I have listenign to jazz.

and again, jazz was my first music...my dad was a jazz drummer and brought me up under his wing. I love jazz, but it is not the be-all, end-all definition of music as an art. It is just one of the colors on the pallet.

Bobby Koeble is an absolute monster and his solo playing on Symbolic - although it only consists of a couple of minutes - is absolutely astonishing, angular and entirely unique. You can probably tell I rather like that album by my avatar...

Spine-tingling.

back to topic... these type of shows are just yuck. 15 people on stage at a time trying to trade solos during these slapped together karaoke cover songs is so cringey. Some of these bands are great, and that I am a fan of, but damn I hate these shows.
And to see Ozzy in that condition is just heartbreaking...

I drive a Subaru, they have their advantages esp. during inclement weather road conditions.
The current models have resolved the previous generation's head gasket isues.
