Where do you live?

I live in the middle of the second flattest state in the USA. The wind is virtually constant. Here's my little domain, surrounded by corn & soybean. I call it the Möbius Strip 'cuz the lifecycle repeats incessantly. This spring, I'm learning all about voles and I'm not having fun with them.

Beautiful photo! Makes me miss my home state of IL. Never thought I'd say that, lol, but when I go back to visit family, I like the flat and open scenery. It's relaxing, like I can breathe. You can take the girl out of the Midwest, but you can't take the Midwest out of the girl. Ha! If it weren't so unbearably cold in the winter, I'd move back.

We are in the “running water” crowd. Mainly ‘cuz we wanted our toilets to flush. A shower would’ve helped, too.

⬇️ Our living room during a 5-day outage when the junction box of our whole-home genny fried, disconnecting us from the power grid during a 20°F week of winter. We had to “wait for parts”.
Nice! We also use a flashlight (torch) set on a counter-top. I've found that a white styrofoam coffee cup over the flashlight lens makes a nice soft area light - good for reading or playing cards at the kitchen table. :)

Lineworkers might not like it, but I backfeed the house with the generator. I installed a 30 amp exterior outlet (inlet?) that runs to the electrical panel in the basement. An interlock on the main breaker in the panel ensures that I don't backfeed the grid and fry some unsuspecting lineworker. The worst part about hooking up the genny is wheeling it from the garage to the electrical access point - it weighs 175 lb/80 kg.

I would have fallen in the "pessimist" category as our basement floods during the snowmelt/rainy season. The generator saved my bacon. But! I've got lots of pruned trees and some beautiful ice photos.

Heat or Running Water? Easy!! Mrs Smoke needs water for her various feminine functions and tasks regardless of the season - hot, cold or in between. I'd figure some way to heat the house in chilly weather or we'd sit in the basement rather than braise in the heat. (FWIW, I added a 30,000 BTU blue-flame natural gas heater in the basement that heats the whole house.) Our current residence is Mrs Smoke's childhood home; her father would hang blankets in the doorways and heat the kitchen with the natural gas range/oven during prolonged power outages.

Nowadays with solar chargers and LED lights, it's easy to illuminate tasks or a room. Failing those, we've got kerosene lamps and lamp oil stashed in the basement. ;)

Venice
Venice, Florida
Just moved here 2-1/2 years ago, from St. Louis, when I retired. It’s the law ya know.
We are really enjoying our paradise. It’s our final home. We did it for several reasons, but the main two is the warmer weather and my health. I’ve hated the cold late in my life and would find myself feeling locked inside when outside dropped in temps. I would do very little of anything. With year around great weather I’m always active. Exersize daily and healthy eating.
Everyone down here are transplants so we are all alike, yet very different.

Whaaaat? One of my neighbors is a recently hired teacher (he retired, but not really) and he teaches at the local high schools, part time. I’ll have to ask him what he knows.

"Where are you guys goin'?"......."We're gonna go live with that guy."
"Which guy?"........"Not the van guy?"..........."maybe..he seemed quite the gentleman and he has a bubble roof"

It doesn't really count as a "where do you live" entry, but Mrs Smoke and I lived in the 40 Mile Point Lighthouse from 1982 to 1983. We lived in the keeper's side - mirrored in the opposite side of the tower from this view (the assistant keeper's side). The small white dormer near the tower was the bathroom - when we got a winter storm from the east (off Lake Huron) the pipes would freeze and the water in the toilet would skim over with ice! We've got lots of good memories. You'll find more photos and info here info if you need a rabbit hole. ;)

Really nice. Only one year though?

Here's another like it: In 1967 my mother & I moved into a beach house in Del Mar, CA. It was a 4-bedroom, 1-bathroom house owned by Desi Arnez. He would house his guests there during the summer, when the Del Mar Race Track was open/running (Desi's house was a block south and in much finer condition). My mother convinced the property manager that we would take care of it during the "off season" from September through May. Rent was $125/month. We lived there for seven seasons, moving out every summer to somewhere cheap and nearby. I played my first drum kit in that top room, which faced the ocean and never bothered anyone. Lotsa stories from that era of life. The house is gone now, replaced with a $12,000,000 upgrade.

Yep, only one year. My buddy and his wife lived there for several years before we did. It was owned by the county and Bob's dad was a county commissioner - the county sheriff lived there prior to my buddy.

In any case, it was rent free, but the occupant had to keep up the park grounds - the county road commission provided all the equipment. It was a nice gig. But! The local economy just plain stunk at that point in time, and with a wife and 3-year old, I was in tough shape. Mrs Smoke had three part time jobs and I couldn't even find a job that paid cash under the table (no taxes, etc). So, I joined the Army and that was that.

At least it was for a season.

Cornwall - far southwest of England.
Lots of gorgeous beaches, surf, beautiful cliffs, ancient history, View attachment 156639little stone fishing villages, art galleries (for my work), tourists and lots of pubs hosting live music.
Could be worse, I guess!
Wow, that's gorgeous! Are the beaches crowded? Water warm enough to get in without a wetsuit in the summer? (Gulf stream?) Is there a surfing culture there?
