Oh man that Astro looks incredible @jda! It's the only one I've ever seen - are you aware of any others out there?

If you're ever looking to sell it, you know where to find me :p

And did you realise your Pearl Special has a rare stamp anomaly? In the 30+ other examples of Pearl Specials that I have photos of, the word "Pearl" is always orientated the same way as the word "Special". The same is true of the Pearl Deluxe series. Yours is the only one I've seen where the Pearl is flipped upside down. Really interesting!

That Flip- is on the 18" yet not on the 20"...
I don't think I had another Astro besides this 20. I had a Kingston 22" (like many have... It was so grey &dusty/ingrained/I liked it @astrickland

to all those that approach a vintage cymbal with trepidation
because of a keyhole
"bah-humbug"
67 NS old K 22" 2877g
it earned that not by me owned since been that way since at least 2002
slowly
like a stream erodes the rocks
it's where and how the weight laid while on a threaded naked stand stem.
I'm thinking it was-- I have no idea who played it that way- But It Came from Tennessee ; now I remember.
And it took 36 days for the guy to ship it. Like he didn't want to give it up. That was a fight on ebay I remember. There was another buyer of his on another item. Refused to ship his item too. We teamed together and threatened the dude who wouldn't ship. It worked. Finally got it. That was 2002.

Great thread, Joe! Thanks (in part) to your wisdom over the 20+ years we’ve been on drum fora together, along with the millions of real life gig and recording experiences I’ve had in that time, I (think) I’ve finally made a stand and settled on ONE bag of pies to take out for everything. I still have some others that I love and will try to use occasionally, but I finally took the plunge and am limiting myself to just the one cymbal bag full of my favorites. There’s freedom in the limitations!

Shown are 3/4 of what’s in that one cymbal bag. All reissue 602s with the exception of one vintage (circa ‘77). The only one not shown, but is always in the bag just in case, is the 18” Thin Flat. The others are 15” SE hats, 20” Heavy (vintage) and 17” Medium. After decades of trying to find my sound in the “thinner is best” world, I finally realized I love ‘em thick and juicy.

Even for the lowest volume stuff, I’m able to achieve what I’m after with the heavier cymbals. The Heavy is 2575g, for example. I’d be interested in trying a heavier flat ride as well. As soon as Dana gets another 602 20” Medium Flat I might take my 18” in and see what kind of trade deal I can get.

Also is a pic of the sticks/implements I’m using and loving. The XCEL sticks are a new find for me, discovered by a recommendation from someone on the forum, and they’ve been game changers. Larger “bulbs” than the old Truelines, which were my favorite sticks ever before they were sadly discontinued. I like these even better. The FlixTips orange are what I use for 90+% of my gigs and are perfect for what I do. The black ones are a bit heavier.
