On my snare I find that a phone or book really sounds good and eliminates ring and helps with the rebound but the issue is the object slips to the bottom of the drum and I have to pause what I'm doing to move it and I need to know what could fix that problem.

A loop of tape or cord that hooks to the rim would be a quick and inexpensive solution. And then there's always bandanas and tea towels to get the thuddy sound without killing the head action too much.

Also, about your thread title: I think you mean "DIY", as in "do it yourself".

Yeah I’ll try it out

Try this and see if you like the sound. It stays on the snare and will cost you nothing. Good luck.

most of them are (the sponge part has) rotted by now I think I still have a few buried in the basement in a box. I think one survived. Rogers were big on them before Japan stole all their ideas...

But if you can find a fresh one..

"Everywhere but the snare" but same works on snares.

An old wallet filled with cards works well. You can hang one end over the edge so it doesn't move.

I personally like to have some ring. Outdoors I like a lot of ring. I usually just Evans Min-Emad strips (or a DIY version with Velcro strips: https://www.amazon.com/Evans-MINEMAD-Tom-Snare-Damping/dp/B0002D0LSG

Here is an example of the ring I like with my 14" X 7" Ludwig 110th Anniversary Heirloom Black Brass from a recent outdoor gig. My moto was just let it ring baby!

Indoors and with other styles of music I use a snare with less ring. I have often used a wallet and it really tames the snare sound. I also use Big Fat Snare drum donuts that work well. The DIY version is to use an old snare drum head over top of the batter with a hole cut in the center.
