Tama

Why did they discontinue those but they still have Starclassic Bubinga Japan and Star Bubinga ?
Bubinga originally got added to the CITES list in 2017. But then in 2019, instrument manufacturers were allowed to use it again.

But I think it's still heavily regulated, meaning it's expensive to use it for making drums. Maybe that's why there doesn't seem to be many drum makers using it now. Tama seems to be the only one using Bubinga consistently.

The tariffs for transporting Bubinga went up massively when it was added to the CITES list - hence everybody else dropped it and Tama now offer it only on their top tier star kits. If there is just one Bubinga piece ( ie an add on tom ) in a container then the WHOLE SHIPMENT is subject to the tariff. The only way to make it feasible would be to wait until they (Tama) had enough orders for Bubinga kits to fill the entire container and at the time that was over two years worth. No one is ordering an upper mid range kit and waiting 2+years for it to arrive.
The add on tom for my B/B had to wait for the last mixed container Tama were shipping into Europe. It took 14 months from when I ordered it.

Tama now offer it only on their top tier star kits.

They also offer it on their Starclassic Bubinga

I own a Starclassic maple and Starclassic walnut/birch, among other Tama Starclassic and Star kits, and I can’t tell the difference from a sonic or quality perspective that would justify the difference between the W/B and SC maple kits. Both are terrific. I can’t imagine that maple is that much more expensive than birch and walnut. View attachment 144212
Now THAT is a stellar finish oh my!!!
