I’ve never played standing up, but was always a big fan of Andy Sturmer from Jellyfish. He did it as well as anyone I’ve ever seen play that way. While I admire those who can, it’s not something I’ve thought about for myself. I can barely play sitting down - no need to add another dimension of...
I wish I had that old truck, Joe! I drive a 2017 Kia Niro with 241K on the hybrid engine. It’s been a great vehicle for me. Not a great gear hauler, but good enough, and the 50mpg is real nice considering all the driving I do. No rust here in my neck of the woods. It’s sooooo dry here.
Going for something radically different (for me) for the gig tonight. No hats - bass drum, snare drum and one cymbal only, with my congas added in for good measure. I feel like I lean on my hi-hats too much so I’m challenging myself to come up with different ways to drive my grooves.
It seems like there are new threads every day about something negative or things we don’t like about music. Isn’t drumming and music supposed to be something that we all love here? I figured I’d post this thread to do my part to bring some positivity. I’m sure it’ll derail within a few posts...
Yes, I’ve been in that GC, before and after the big remodel. It’s worth visiting if you’re not from the area, just for the scale of it and they usually have some cool piece of rock history on display (AVH’s white/black Vista set for a long time, for example). As far as buying anything from...
Thanks for your concern, @vyacheslav. Some things to consider:
Pro Drum is a mom and pop shop in LA. Everything’s more expensive there. For example, a gallon of gas at the Mobil station down the street was over $5 for reg unleaded. Also, LA County has a crazy tax rate - 9.75%. That added $8+ to...
Took a drive to see the boys at Pro Drum today. Three 14” coated Ambassadors ran me $91 and change. No typo… $91+ for three 14” drumheads. Thank goodness I can get years of use out of one, especially at the volume levels I’m usually playing.
I don’t see how heavy hitters can afford heads...
Did one of those sessions today that checked off two of the three boxes necessary to make it worthwhile.
1. Play with friends/great musicians - ✅
2. Play interesting/enjoyable music - ✅
3. Good money - ❌
Oh well, can’t win ‘em all. :) This was an old school country session for an up and coming...
The main difference I see between the two forums is the moderation here is a million times better than over there. That and people seem to stick more to drumming-related topics here. There’s still a ton of useful archived info on DFO, but my days of contributing there were over a long time ago.
Congrats, @Drumolator! Those are great cymbals and a very clean, simple setup. Between those and your Mapex drums it seems like you’ve really got “your” sound figured out. I wanna be like you when I grow up! :) I think I’m there with drums and almost there with cymbals.
I feel this! I went through a 25+ year season of experimentation where I wanted to try everything I possibly could, including drums, cymbals and heads. Once I got my drums and cymbals squared away (more or less), my focus shifted to experimenting with drumheads.
Right around this time last...
Microfiber cloth folded (for padding) and a tiny bit of gaff to secure the cloth, my friend! :) *EDIT* - I’ve only had 2 and 3 rivet clusters, never the around the world spread, which my solution wouldn’t work for. LOL
I’ve had several riveted cymbals over the years, just never a riveted flat...
Microfiber cloth works great and was my preferred option till I switched to a cheapo sheepskin chamois, which is slightly less ugly. 🤪 I cut up two sections of the chamois and carry them with me at all times along with a few binder clips. Of all the tom muffling options I’ve ever tried, this has...
You’re probably right. Mine is at least 10 years old but probably closer to 15. It’s no substitute for real rivets, in my opinion, but it gets 60% of the way there. I’m trying to decide if I’d like to drop a couple rivets in both flat rides so I’m living with this for awhile to see if I truly...
Great thread topic, @JoeVermont! I bet you have some really pretty drives in your neck of the woods. I live in a small rural town an hour’s drive north of Bakersfield. It’s technically southern CA but I’m in the agricultural heartland of the state. Most of my work is in Bakersfield so I have a...
Righteous kit and great story, @Rattlin' Bones. Congrats and looking forward to a vid in the future with your trio and you on the new Sakae set. Well played, sir!
