I can’t believe there’s not yet a thread about Bill Ward’s triumphant return to the drum stool in Black Sabbath yesterday. SOVB started a thread about some of the other drummers, but Bill is the big story.
Had a double bass Ludwig set with Sabians. Seemed a little tight at first but loosened...
I figured for $5, what have I got to lose? It’s not usually my style for a snare head, but I have a friend who loves his so I tried it.
I didn’t hate it, though I didn’t entirely love it. It does cut out some ring, but leaves some behind, which is cool for those who want rim shots to...
It's mah birfday Monday, so on Saturday we're going to Raleigh to eat at a Japanese steak house that we thought was part of the Kobe restaurant chain in Florida but isn't. But first...
...I'll be making my first visit to 2112 Percussion. I don't feel like I'm lacking in anything right now...
I think everyone knows that you can go too bright with cymbals when the blood starts coming out of your audience’s ears and mouth, but is it possible to go too dark?
I’m thinking no for a couple reasons…
—-I don’t pretend to know much about making cymbals, but it seems to me that you can only...
I was checking on the news this morning and found an article on @bermuda ’s old pal Weird Al talking about Prince rejecting his parody idea for 1999 called $19.99. It was going to be a song about infomercials and how everything is $19.99, but Prince rejected it and Al doesn’t like to do...
I got a DW drop clutch a while back, and I had to quit using it because the hook always clanks into the assembly every time you use the pedal, and it’s loud.
Is there something I’m doing wrong or is it the nature of the beast? Are there any drop clutches that don’t clank?
I crashed hard today, but the missus and I drove to DC because my good internet friend Mark Damon is the bassist for TPR. And now he’s my good real life friend!
It’s like we’re twins, huh?
Anyway, if you haven’t heard The Pretty Reckless, I recommend it. they’re like a mix of modern hard...
...and they're pretty darn good, but at $20 for a bag of 10, that's $60 to outfit three drums. Still, I might just spring for it. They're difficult to fit at first, but they loosen up a bit and fit well on the drums I’ve tried so far, which are my two snares and my 16 floor. Holds the tuning...
Haven’t used it in a while, but I bought a bag of Rock Locks and wanted to test them on my snare with more precision. So I opened it and the mic no longer works with it. You think the newer Apple OS in my phone outgrew the app after 3 years, or do they shut it down after three years and make...
Here’s what I observed:
—-Drummers are a lot more accepting of sound tech wishes than people on other instruments.
—-Almost every drummer will muffle snare and toms to some extent but a good third of them don’t like to admit it.
—-Racks are a lot more common with small set users these days...
Seen Maxwell’s demo, watching DCP now, wow! Craviotto did the shells, 5 and 7” depths they start with, extended wires, and they even include a Bovin calfskin head. Hoops are thicker and less stick choppy, but they have that way cool old school engraving. Shane just said that all the parts are...
Been looking since the summer and I’ve yet to find one trashed enough to buy at a decent price. They’re all newer, expensive, and look too good to rewrap.
But I CAN find 18x16 floor toms and 18x10 concert toms. So I’m forming an exploratory committee to decide what to do. Each has advantages...
I bought an old Wuhan 18 last week and it came today in good shape, but the Gibraltar cymbal sleeve had to be “screwed” onto the cymbal, then placed on the stand. It sways a tad when you whack it, but I feel like iit’s going to break in time. And hey, $50 is $50.
I know you can take a reamer...
Let’s discuss it, shall we?
My usual tuning on a snare is medium high (400 hz (G) snare side, 220 (A) batter) or sometimes a G, but not higher. A few days ago, I cranked the batters on my snares a good bit higher because I was bored and never tried going way higher than that before. I didn’t...
Old jazz records that end with a choked splash. I intend to do it for every uptempo song I play that has a cold ending, regardless of genre.
Sabian AA 10”. Had an old A when I was a kid till it broke. Sounded fine.
I know that set is too big as it sits for gigging, but what about the front head? As much as I love it, I have a feeling some may find it distracting. I have an Amb I can put on it, and being honest with myself, the Amb sounds better (this is an Aquarian), but I should replace it anyway just...
My original set had this twang to the sound that I never paid attention to until I added a couple toms recently. I thought the twang was part bearing edges and part 6 ply vs 3 ply. But when I got the edges redone, the 6 ply drums still had a twang.
Then on DFO I got a polite but firm reply...
Not that I was unhappy with the Gibraltars but they were starting to stretch out of shape since replacing them in June. I tend to run them a tad tight most of the time, and they stretch and rattle weirdly. So despite feeling a bit like a dupe buying into the hype, I got a couple Canopus sets...
Got a set of them for the 14 x 10 converted 3 ply Ludwig concert tom I just put together to replace bent 2.3mm’s, and it’s such a vast improvement. I don’t necessarily want my toms to ring forever, but I want a decent amount, and the 14 wasn’t sounding ringy enough to me, even after getting new...
