Max Sansalone

I found this channel recently and have been enjoying most of what he does.

Anyone else?

Love his channel. This guy is so deep in the pocket lint feels like it's invaded his home.

He has an outstanding touch.

Beautiful dynamics and smooth as.

He really knows and understands the voices of his kit.

Max Sansalone's channel is one of the best and the most unique drum channel on YouTube. He offers his own teaching material on the channel. But besides that, his unique groove clips energizes and motivates.

In the first clip he gets into the groove so much that at the end he gets beamed up to another dimension!
I think the snare in the second clip is Ludwig.

THIS BEAT WOULDN"T LET GO OF ME

LONGEST SNARE RING EVER

Definitely my favorite You Tube drummers. Killer feel.

Hey I never knew this guy is local to me! Been watching some of his stuff for a while And it just occured to me to check out his bio. Turns out he's in Montreal!! I might just send a feeler out for some lessons... I love his playing, touch, feel and overall musical aesthetics.

Have you finally taken lessons with him?
Yes I did... and we've had 2 lessons to date.

I won't go at length about my playing background, suffice it to say drums aren't my first instrument and I came to drumming late in life. I can hold a beat alright and make it feel good. And my songwriting foundation helps in choosing to play stuff that work in songs. Politely put: I am way closer to McCartney's playing than Weckl's... ;-)

I came to Max in full humility with a willingness to learn the absolute basics properly. So he had me work on grip and some super-slow singles, concentrating hard on stick height, relaxation, velocity consistency and the space between each note.

Max is super soft spoken and calm but he's got an extremely keen ear and eye. Nothing gets past him.

This fall my band has been very busy with gigs but I will probably book another lesson in the next few weeks.

I've also spoken to a feew local pros who have been to Max's for some post-school education.

And contrary to some other educators out there, there is absolutely none of that "Yeah but can he play?" controversy about him. Dude CAN play ;-)

On the subject of drum hacks. Need to add some sizzle to your cymbal instantly? Just put your keychain on the cymbal like Max!!

Apart from those terrific basement grooves, he's also got a video somewhere of him playing live and yeah...he can definitely play.

Lemme see if I can find, it's been a while...

Edit : this is the one I'm talking about. Excellent time, listen to how he hits those "ones" on the ride in the early sax solo, nice variations, and you can just "see" him listening to what the soloist is doing and patiently building things up alongside him.

Dude could very easily sub for any of the players on the Scary Pockets gig.

Yeah he's done a lot of jingles/TV//film work here in our market. Plus, he's played with a bunch of international artists needing a pick up band at the Festival de Jazz de Montréal. They usually don't call ham-fisted neanderthals to do those sorts of gigs.

But the guy isn't big on the self-promotion stuff. Heck I've been playing in the same market for 30 years (he even played with some former bandmates of mine) and I didn't know who he was until I stumbled upon his bio a little while back. Well it doesn't help that the few people we know in common usually call him by his full italian name, wich he shortens to Max on his YT channel...

But yeah he's a stupidly talented drummer and I'd love to hear him with the Pockets, but probably even more so with their Larry Goldings funkier and jazzier featuring spinoff :Scary Goldings.

Just curious, how slow are super slow singles. I hear of learning about stick height and velocity this way.
