What's the Difference between DrumForum.org and Drummerworld.com/forums

Broadly speaking (at least up to a couple/three years ago), my main observation was that DFO is more often gear-centered, while DW seems more concentrated on drum education and stage/studio insights.

In terms of each forum’s feel (and without speculating over causes or potential inherent faults with either), DFO comes across with a breezy, back clapping (sometimes friendly bear-poking) camaraderie. DW, meanwhile, holds to a tighter, more serious-minded discourse.

Therefore DW is like the Q&A session at a drum clinic for serious, working/pro musicians, while DFO is more like the laughs shared between musician friends who speak each other‘s language following a night of jamming at the bar.

These are broadstroke impressions, and obviously all of these strengths are present in each, especially as the forums continue sharing more of the same contributors.

I contribute to both, I get a lot out of both, and I’m not naive enough to believe the two won’t merge someday. But until then, vive la difference.

it would nice to emulate the layout of the Buy/Sell/Trade sections here that Drum Forum has.
it's like adding a reverb/ebay/craigslist without the fees anyone in the world any member could entertain
I think we could buy sell and trade among each other here.
Without any GloBal ConFlicts
I wouldn't mind a fee, providing it's lower than Reverb, eBay, etc. Bandwidth, maintenance, fintech should DWrld choose to be the middle man, etc. costs money.

I've only participated in DFO a little, as needed in reference to something I found in a Google search occasionally. So, I have no opinion on nuance differences. From this thread's posts, it seems I'd like it here more, but that doesn't mean the other is bad. 🤷‍♂️

I've been on both forums for 20 years. Between the two, I think there's something for everyone. In general, it seems:

DFO has had an older membership age, and therefore I've learned a lot from them over the years. The knowledge base there is huge.
DFO is more active and moves more quickly.
DFO has less subforums, which I appreciate. Sometimes I still get lost on DW ("Where was that post about xyz?" Lol).
DFO is more US-centric, while DW is more international. Nothing wrong with either, just a difference.

The original owner of DFO reached out to me in my very early days there. Great, great guy. I've met him and many other dear friends on DFO and we get together at the Chicago Drum Show every year (DFO has its own booth). Carrying those online friendships into the real world has been very rewarding.

Those are the main reasons I've been more active on DFO. I like DW, too, and try to pass along knowledge and participate here when I can. Never had a problem with any of the mods on either forum. IMO, they've all done a great job -- I appreciate both forums and all the mods. We're lucky to have at least 2 forums still alive!

I never joined DFO but I lurk occasionally, it seems like some content lost from the cymbalholic days have found its way over there through conversation. I personally hate navigating their forum because I always have ads in between posts so it's a pain to read. I like our lack of ads... Well I noticed lately we have a small ad banner at the bottom on mobile but it's still less. Gotta pay the bills I guess.

I don't foresee a formal combination but I wouldn't be surprised if the more active members of one move to the other if either ever were to shut down.

The humor at DFO is more flexible and tolerant , not as easily offended and often coming from the shared experience of singing for your supper , so to speak .

Their Vintage Forum is remarkably informative .

I haven’t found that to be the case. DFO has quite a few fire starters and flame fanners.
Yes I ran into that on DFO. A mother was posting about her daughter's new band (daughter is young woman) and I made some comments specific to the band and the overhype that got me bullied and pushed around on that thread. After that incident, I stopped participating much there.

Definitely did not find the humor to be as you stated. I do agree about the vintage forum being informative.

I see that I’m fast approaching the 7-year mark since I last posted over on DFO. Do I miss it? Sometimes I do honestly. I liked the For Sale section. I was a big vintage drum fanatic back in those days, and some of the folks there were super helpful with either sharing their knowledge or helping me locate parts. (Not a vintage guy at all anymore, but that has nothing to do with DFO.) So a big part of me has fond memories of my time over there.

One of the bigger complaints with DFO, even back in the day, is that there seemed to be an unspoken “hierarchy” where some folks most certainly got preferential treatment over others. Kind of an “old boys club” kind of vibe. That’s not cool at all. I can say that I saw that for myself numerous times. I would call it out but was either mocked or ignored. I like to think that I have a pretty thick skin, so I tried not to let it bother me, but it always felt wrong. Like it was going against the core tenant of why it existed in the first place.

I still lurk from time to time, but I can see that this is not the case at all. In fact, DFO went from being arguably semi-intolerant to even less flexible and tolerant now. That’s part of the reason why I’m not all that interested in posting there again.

I do want to say that I’m not trying to poo-poo on DFO. Not at all. If you get something out of it, please sign up and contribute over there. Having DFO as a resource for knowledge is great and that helps us all out in the long run. I chose not to participate over there because of what I mentioned above and more importantly everything I’ve asked for assistance on I’ve been able to get answered here to my satisfaction.

I frequent both forums . Each have their strong points . I took a two year hiatus from Drumforum.org after another forum member (that loved local to me ) physically threatened me on open forum and the Admins/Ownership did nothing other than deleting the post where I was threatened . Told me a lot about how much that ownership group cared about their membership .

I like the wider age range here . I feel very comfortable here and like the members . It was nice to JDA made it over here and providing his curious blend of humour and expertise . Drumbob was another that I appreciated seeing participate here . We had been long distance friends for about 25 years .

Spooky grew up with DFO and got in a band with a major label deal, and people are protective of her. Not saying anyone has to like what she does but there’s nothing to be gained for anyone to trash her band, especially by someone who clearly likes jazz and blues above all else.

Here are my posts on DFO that met with quite a bit of pushback and bullying. Not sure where I "trashed" the band, JimmyM. I commented and gave my opinion. It was not welcome.

Sorry this just all seems a bit too pretentious. Not knocking the mom good for her. Just the band seems typical of young people where their priority is the modeling of the perceived image of a band. Upcoming photoshoot?

But hey ya gotta start somewhere, and playing with peers is that somewhere. It's cool.

OK. I listened. Priestgate kinda straddled between off the wall and mainstream. A pretty smooth sound most of the time. But a lot of acting that seemed coached. Not my cuppa but hey doin' their thing. Girl can play - I liked her playing more than anyone else in the band.

People! Get thicker skins. If "Priestgate kinda straddled between off the wall and mainstream." "A pretty smooth sound most of the time." "Girl can play - I liked her playing more than anyone else in the band." is coming down pretty hard, then, we'll........

So if anyone "comes down hard" in an Internet forum on any band, they gotta get into a contest and post their band playing? You have to pre-qualify?

So going forward don't any of you comment on any band or player Buddy Rich Ginger Baker Ringo whoever without also posting video of you doing it better. I'll be looking for you and demand you post your own videos doing it better lol

And you are not allowed to comment on your favorite team's quarterback unless you post film of you doing it better. Or comment on a breakthrough new young author novel unless you can post a link to your novel that's better.

Take a deep breath. Come on be real. It's Internet content.

Girl can play. She should have her own band, sorta like Sofia Goodman.

My posts received responses like this: I love that you pop in to a thread you have no investment in or connection to and just drop a sh1tty comment and then double down and say another sh1tty thing on top of it in response to others pointing out your initial sh1tty comment.

So, yeah, kinda weird vibe on DFO.

Use adblockers in your browser(s), and voila, 0 interference!

Your whole first paragraph was trashing the band, my friend. I don’t get why you don’t see that. “Pretentious” is not a compliment or even a neutral word. It’s 100% an insult and a fairly big one. Some would argue that it’s also bullying to accuse them of being about the photos and not the music.

That said, it’s your opinion and you’re welcome to voice it. But you also will get fallout for it from fans and friends and that’s just the way it is, whether you’re on DFO or not.

And do you ever see them merging / merged together some day?

I think that the majority of members are in both forums, so I don't know how different a merged forum might be. There might be a few members who leave - I guess they'll show us! - but I believe that the overall vibe would be pretty much the same.

I'm a member of both (and some other surviving forums) but I spend 99% of my time here. I check in at DFO about once a month and browse the recent topics. Occasionally I'll join in a discussion, and if appropriate will respond when my name is mentioned now and then (which often references a post made here.)

Or they could just add a vintage drum forum to DW ;). But we do talk about vintage drums and cymbals on here through the course of the existing forums.
