Ebenor 10th aniversary elm stave snare and kit

Yesterday William Leclerc (local drum builder of Ebenor drums) came to one of our gigs to deliver a very special kit.

I will do a more thorough write up on it in another post . The wood comes from a tree of very important historic significance. Suffice it to say there was only 2 full kits and 10 snares made.

8x12 - 16x16 - 14x22 and matching 6x14 sanare. Elm stave construction with polished spun brass hardware. Everything is handmade and of the highest quality.

A few minutes of play left me in awe of the whole thing but partiicularly the kick and the snare.

And now for the historic provenance:

Quebec City (Canada) is the place where the British defeated the French to pretty much seal the destiny of what was to become Canada at the famous Battle of the plains of Abraham in 1759. There was an elm tree called "l'arbre au boulet" litterally: The cannonball tree. It grew with a cannonball from the historic battle through its trunk and it has been a touristic staple of Quebec's old city pretty much forever.

In 2022, the tree had to be cut down because it was rotting from the inside. But the city decided to have the tree cast in bronze and put the statue back where the tree was.

The artist studio who got the contract to make the statue is coincidentally the shop who helps Ebenor with their hardware. After the casting was done, they had a few healthy logs that were salvageable and Ebenor bought them to make a limited series.

My band's tour ends in December, in Quebec City, at Centre Videotron, the big arena. The gig is already sold out and it will be filmed for a TV special. The occasion was just too perfect, I had to grab that once in a lifetime kit. I have lived in Quebec City for my formative years in my late teens/early 20's so it means a lot to me.

I'm usually NOT a bare wood kit kinda guy nor a "pay prohibitive prices for absolutely exclusive stuff" either. But this I just had to have, for all it represents. As an art object and a piece of history. It being a damn fine sounding piece of history is just a very nice bonus ;-)

Those are very nice drums. May they give you many years of musical joy! Peace and goodwill.

I just checked out their website..... even their snare drum bag is gorgeous!
