Toms placement

In my 'concept' Tama Swingstar + Stagestar double-bass setup I would have 6 toms-
10X8,11X9, 12X8, 13X10 rack toms &
14X12, 16X16 floor toms.

Now the problem is that I would like to use the 14" like a rack tom by one of the following:-
(My right bass drum has 18" diameter + 2" rise, so I think a tom with 12" depth would fit on the rack)
1> Mount the 10" tom using a snare stand on the left of the left bass drum, and mount the other four (not the floor tom) above the bass drum.
2> Mount the 12" tom between the bass drums using a snare stand, and mount the other four (not the floor tom) above the bass drum. This will make the bass drum wider apart, would that affect my playing? (I haven't bought the Stagestar yet...)
3> Mount the 14" tom using its floor tom spurs (feet) irregularly i.e. all the legs would be attached at different lengths to the floor tom clamps. Then use a wide, but short stool to raise it to the desired height.

which of the above methods should I apply? I am leaning towards no.2 because it maintains the symmetry of the drum kit, but I am not sure about the wide apart bass drums.
Below is my drum set without toms. (the 16" is a floor tom and the 14" is the snare drum and the 13" are the hi-hats)
Sorry for the long post.
Thanks.

Try them all and see what you like best. We can't tell you what's going to be best for you.

Yeah, but I don't have the Stagestar, yet.
Can anyone of you do this simple favor for me and check if it works:-
Use the snare stand to mount a 12" or 11" tom.
Use a stool to raise the stand.
Put the result between two bass drum.
Check if you can play the bass drums properly.

Thanks.

So you are looking at a kit with a 10",11",12",13",14",16" toms?

to me those sizes are way too close together to really get much benefit or difference in tone in my book. 10,12,14,16 fairly standard and good tonal spacing with the 2" diameter difference. Or even 11,13,16. From 10-11 and 11-12 and 12-13 I just don't know how much of a tonal difference you will hear.

I don't have much of a choice... where I live, you don't get individual drums and much variation in drum sizes, so I have decided that I would buy a Stagestar and just sell the snare drum and the throne.

There is only one company currently offering 11" diameter toms that I'm aware of and Tama isn't one of them. They just don't make an 11 " tom.

Yeah I didn't see any 11" drums listed on Tama's website.

Also not sure anyone can really help you with this setup as you have a 22" on the left and an 18" on the right. Most guys these days favor a double pedal vs the double bass drum setup itself. I'd say with the setup you are looking at Gibraltar rack might be your best option.

Well, I have a 11" Rack Tom from my Tama Swingstar kit.

Modern day swingstar,or 70's 80's swingstar?I don't think Tama EVER made an 11 "swingstar tom.Tama at one time made 15" toms, but haven't done so in decades. You either have a 10 or a 12.Measure from bearing edge to bearing edge.I just checked all my Tama catalogs, and there is no 11" tom listed for swingstars,so if you have one,it's very rare, custom made and a one of.

I just checked again to be sure.I went back to when swingstars were introduced in 72 till modern day.Tama only made 8/10/12/13/14/15 toms in the swingstar line. We're talking diameter, not depth.Tama did make a 11" deep,by 12" diameter tom,not the other way around.

My guess is that you have measured wrong. Are you measuring with the hoops on?

Regarding your original idea, not a good one to put a tom up on a snare stand and then that on a stool to raise it higher. It could topple with any forceful hit, or accidental bump..... boom tom broken.

That and toms seated in a snare stand also have a tendency to loose tone and sustain, much better off mounting it or converting it to a FT

Tama used to make an 11"tom...for real.I have seen them and i still have the catalogs with the size chart showing an 11" across and 10"deep tom.they also made an 11"across by 7"deep shallow tom...

I never said that Tama never made an 11" tom,I know they did,but not in the Swingstar line.
Begining in 86 Tama made Artstar II's,and Artstar Custom with a 11x10 tom available

Creststar's were available with 11x8,and 11x10 toms

Grandstars were available with a 11x10 tom.I'm sure you may also find different 11" tom depths, which were custom made. That's probably not an all inclusive list.Tama was very accomodating back then.I have a Tama vintage 77 Superstar 8x6.5 double headed tom that was never offered in the catalog, except as a concert tom.My drum has factory off set lugs, factory tom mount, factory muffler (yes a muffler on an 8" tom) and factory bearing edges, stained the same color as the interior. That drum shouldn't exist, but it does and Tama says it's the real deal.

All of the above drums were top of the line or second to top of the line.Swingstars were then and they are now entry level drums, and as such, didn't have as many choices in sizes or finish.I still highly doubt the existance of a Swingstar 11" tom.A photo backed up by a scale and additional pics of the badge, bearing edges, and interior of the drum is the only evidence that's probitive in this case. It's not what you say....it's what you can prove.:)

Well Mr. Steve, I don't doubt your extensive knowledge of Tama and its lines.
But there exist a 11" X 9" Rack Tom in the Modern Swingstar Line (I got a brand new one in Sept 2011). want Proof? Check Attached image:-
(Its not photoshoped. It is depth X diameter (No snare drum has a diameter of 5.5" and depth of 14"). It is a swingstar because it says 'Swingstar DX Hi-Hat Stand'

Proof

We have a winner!

I actually didn't know Tama made an 11" Swingstar tom, either. You taught me something new today.

So the only thing that strikes me odd about that is the model number says 12a which would usually designate that it's a 12" toms as it does with the 13 and 16. So I wonder which one is a typo, the model number or the actual size listed?? What does it say on the badge of the drum you have?

DEFEAT ACCEPTED...
I measured the tom it was 12 inch...

About 8 months back, in Feb 2012, Before Tama replaced it with the Rockstar on their Online list, it also said that the tom was 11X9. Also every website says so, from musician's friend to zzounds...

This is INFAMY.

(well, now it would be easier to get new heads for the tom, thanks Konaboy)
