My favorite sticks

New 2025 Meinl has a Standard 2b that is Medium-Light weight.
But still no nylon tips :(

I played Meinl sticks for a while a few years ago and really liked them, but I really missed my nylon tips so I went back to Pro Mark for the time being. If Meinl ever introduces sticks with nylon tips, I'll switch back in an instant. I even gave them that feedback around 2 years ago, but alas, the demand seems not to be there for them.

My current favourite stick is the Vic Firth Ash Soan signature stick - barrel tip , long taper , double glaze finish .

I use Vic Firth 5A's. However, my favorite pair of sticks are a pair my teacher Ron Hurst (drummer - Steppenwolf) gave me. These are the sticks he used at the Ryman Auditorium in 2017.It was their 50th anniversary concert. I hung them on my wall. LOL

I know Step's sound man. He's a local legend in Wichita Kansas.

After using hickory sticks for most of my drumming life, I've switched to maple for the foreseeable future.

Over the years I've used 7A, 5A & 5B sizes, all hickory. The size I would use depended on the music I was playing, and which cymbals I used. While the 5B felt great in hand, I didn't like how it affected my cymbal sound. In December I found that the Promark Todd Sucherman sticks are 5B in size and I gave 'em a try. I love 'em enough to put pine tar on them and put all my other sticks away.

Now, if only Promark would coat these sticks with their ActiveGrip. I've asked, but was brushed off.

Edit: Only one stick has broken in 6 weeks of playing. 💪

Zildjian 5A's and Vic Firth Legacy brushes (forever grateful to Sinc for hipping me to those).

Is there a difference ( or what is...) between Zildjian and Vic Firth 5A sticks?

I'm a guitar player ( who loves drums/ drum culture) that plays rudiments on a practice pad.

And since things will probably never get beyond this ( apartment life, no $$, bad back) ,
I DO have fun using different sticks- I just dig the different feel in the hands, attack, tone...
all my sticks ( so far) are Vic Firth ( and 1 'heavy' Vader 5A pair which feel 'dead')

* just curious, thanks!

Oh my god! The only time I've tried Gorilla snot on my sticks, the friction/stiction was so intense that it resulted in a bad case of open blisters. Is there a trick to applying this stuf that I wasn't aware of?

Maybe 'cuz I have small callouses on my index fingers from using Promark Active Grip sticks? Or maybe 'cuz I barely hold onto my sticks? I mean, I can't sing, so there's that.

I wish this stuff had been around in the 1970s when I rowed crew. This stuff would've been very helpful when pulling a wet oar.

Maybe I put too much on my sticks but the damn stuff was so sicky, I could open my hands palm facing down, fingers fully extended and sticks wouldn't fall down. They were just freaking glued to my fingers...

And for the record: singing doesn't help much with stick slippage ;-)

You need callouses or drumming gloves in order to use waxed drumsticks.
I used to use Vic Firth Stick Wax with success.I play bare handed and have a tiny bit of calouses at my fulcrum point. It is just a bit of a chore to apply and sticks will attract dust, lints and the wax will become dirty pretty fast.

Anyway my new project is trying dipping my sticks in plasti dip or similar rubbery coating agent. We'll see how that fares.

You could have used surfboard wax on the oars. I use Sex Wax on my stick, mostly in hot weather.

LOL

Yeah, that's too much. Try a tiny pinch, and rub it on the grip area of your stick. A little goes a long way.

I've GOT to try those. Why does it seem over the years that I remember Pro-Mark sticks feeling better in my hands..am I being overly eccentric?. This just hit me.

I use the Meinl Stick Wax and it doesn't cause blisters. Works well.

I tried dipping sticks in the plasti dip product and wasn't satisfied with the end result.

But wait...didn't you just finish a practice space complete with soundproofing (the weird room for the m.i.l.)?? :ROFLMAO:
No soundproofing (maybe some day), and it is right on my property line and on the second floor overlooking my neighbor's yard exactly where he has his barbeque set up. As entertaining as my drumming and guitar playing may be to me, I don't want to ruin his dinner.
