Modern equivalent to Pearl World Series - no luck finding a matching floor tom...

...so since I've resigned myself to having something mismatched with the kit I posted about here, I'm looking for the least expensive 16" 8-lug gloss black (not sparkled, not matte, not stained with visible wood grain, just piano-like black), painted and lacquered floor tom. Pearl's Session Studio Select is their modern matching shell recipe (birch outer, mahogany inner), but they currently don't offer Piano Black in that line, and they're expensive enough already that I'm sure I can't afford a custom order to go with a beat-up mid-80s kit. I thought about the birch Yamaha Stage Custom in "Raven Black" but I don't like the greenish hue in bright light (I mean, I wouldn't mind a whole kit in that finish, but I'm trying to match my kit), and so I'm currently leaning to the mahogany Gretsch Catalina Club in the like-named Piano Black. But, I'm open to other suggestions- get a cheapo wrapped Export or something, wait for the wrap to bubble, and then strip/paint/lacquer it? Or is there something else in the market I'm missing?

Just an off hand comment. I love my World Series kit. Sound so good with the right head choice.

The Gretsch floor tom ..... there's one on Reverb, for $220 + $35 sh. If that's the one you're talking about, that's probably your best option, if you gotta get it now. A DW Design 16 is $627. A cheaper floor tom, if it needs to be wrapped .... your probably getting close to the price of the Catalina.

The Catalina will fit the bill until you get an actual Pearl World Series 16. Then you sell off the Catalina. I play this "waiting" game all the time. The joys of loving old drums

Sound Percussion were a Pearl later late stencil looked the same Wrapped not lacquer and usually a 15" floor.
There was a 20/12/15 across the street I thought about... Same lug as above

So if you can stand black-wrapped...

Hi @timmdrum,

How about this kit listed here: Used Pearl World Series Kit

I don't know if you've seen this listing already, but not too bad for the whole enchilada. :)
I did see that several months ago, and called about it; he won't ship them. He asked if there was a chance I could make it to the Chicago Drum Show, and being in North Carolina, I said no, not knowing that @heartbeat was going to go...! (Not that I'd assumed you'd have the means to bring them back to NC with you, Amy. ☺️)

See if an original Session Series floor tom pops up. That's what I understand became of World Series, and might be a good sonic match.

Oh, I've searched for all iterations of a Pearl drum with the same shell recipe, from the original Sessions to current, including considering inquiring about the cost of custom ordering a new Session Studio Select in Piano Black, but quickly realized that would be out of my price range.

For cheap enough, I could stand it, but I feel I need a 16 because the rack toms I have are 10 and 13.

I could have! I make the drive every year. Let me know if you ever need anything.

Well, dang! My only other hangup about that kit is that it appears wrapped rather than lacquered, but maybe... Thanks!

I really prefer a lacquered drum just to match (as closely as possible) the others. My plan A is the Gretsch at this moment, with the intention of selling it later if I find the matching drum, just as you said. I've emailed an offer but will likely get it even if it's turned down.

Update: The more affordable Gretsch drum slipped through my fingers- I made an offer that the seller said he'd accept but someone bought it before he could accept it. This week I found & purchased a brand new reissue Pearl Wood-Fiberglass. I don't know if Kapur/FG will be as good a match as the mahogany Gretsch, but it's in the Pearl family with the same painted & lacquered Piano Black finish.
