To me, what makes a good pedal "good" is how the individual pieces work. If there is a lot of slack between components (very high tolerances) then you will inevitably feel it when you go from that to a better (also usually more expensive) pedal. The better pedal is going to have low tolerances meaning there will be no play or it will be so minimal you won't feel it, and in turn you would be able to play better/easier. This is not as obvious with single pedals because there is no slave pedal involved and a lot less moving parts.I use a yamaha direct drive but the axis are supposed to be very cool.
Yamaha pedals (specifically the direct drive model have low tolerances so you probably don't feel any slack anywhere. as mentioned before, I would add the improved shaft (because it eliminates slack from the slave pedal completely) so that your slave pedal basically feels as if you were playing a single pedal, almost like you are cheating.
As far as the Axis.. I can tell you they felt great to me, super light and very responsive. I have not tried the direct drive Yamaha's so I can't comment much on them other than the fact that they look very well built (I have seen them in person). I also tried the Pearl Demon Drives and they felt way too heavy for me, I'm sure that I would have gotten used to them. Also maybe by now you are used to how the Yamaha pedals feel, it is possible that if you tried the Axis you might not like them..(maybe too light for you).
