Are kids and hobbyists getting priced out of drumming?

Please discuss as above but I'm having a rant either way after a retail experience that was less enjoyable than having a wisdom tooth out and I can account for both. When I was a broke student I could easily keep my gear in tip top condition doing pub gigs about 20 years ago. Sticks and heads...

Worst setup of gear you've owned

For a bit of fun seeing as there's been a few what was your first kit kinda threads going round. Out of all of the gear you've owned and mistakes you've made along the way, what's the worst set up you could make of equipment that was the result of youthful exuberance or following a fad...

Been asked to record drums for an album

As it says on the tin, been asked to put drums down for 9 tracks (so far) on an Americana project by my function band singer. I know I've got the call because I've got a good ol' thumpy Ludwig and from the demos it's heavily leaning leaning to that warm dead 70s thud. With that in mind, I'm...

    Winter marquee gig. Alarm bells!

As above I've got an outdoor marquee gig on Saturday. Done a load of gigs for the organisers. They're farmers from Hereford and are a good bunch but there's serious alarm bells ringing about playing in a big tent during winter. 1) We had our first snowfall this morning and the next few days are...

When you can scratch that forever year old drum itch.....but you're a sensible adult

Always wanted a vistalite, wanted a 26 bass drum again. Big fan of that bloke from Redditch who could play a bit that used both between about 72-75ish. A very, very clean 2004 reissue Amber Vistalite is available and I've got the cash to get it but I can't think of when I'd use it and to be...

    Church Drumming

Finally did my first church gig tonight. Not a bad looking one either. Could get used to them 😉 https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exeter_Cathedral I've done big castles and more stately homes than I've had hot dinners but this is the most stunning venue I've ever played. Sound crew provided and...

Longest time between seeing an artist again

I think my old man has broken a record last night. We took him to see Eric Clapton last night who is still very good at the tender age of 79. Band were amazing. The last time he saw him was spring 1967 with Cream, 57 years ago. Can anyone get close to that?

Retired my first piece of equipment!

Bit of a tongue in cheek post, my cymbal bag finally gave up the ghost after 21 years of loyal service including being stolen and bought back safe (I'd go back 21 years ago in a heartbeat!) It's getting retired to excess cymbal storage purposes only. The bottom has been held together with duct...

A history lesson from Phil Collins

So I'm currently stateside in San Antonio, just done New Orleans and Houston with lots of miles behind the wheel. If anyone has visited the Alamo there is a massive collection of artifacts donated courtesy of Phil Collins who it turns out is a wee bit of a history buff when not flying the flag...

Hey guys n gals Found a very interesting sale Slingerland Radioking Restoration at a very tempting price. Now I know if something sounds too good to be true it usually is......but...... Can anyone here confirm if these shells are legit from this pic. Asked for more photos but this is all I...

    Playing in Tribute Bands

What's everyone's stance on them? My better half has got us tickets to the Bootleg Beatles tonight and my corn alarm is exploding. I can't take the pretending to be someone seriously. Especially when there's wigs, etc, phony scouse accents going on! However I saw these guys about six weeks...

Feel kinda bad for turning a free kit down

Had a message on Saturday saying this kit was free to a good home just come and collect it. Looks like an APK/XPK and that snare looks like a bog standard Tama from the lugs. I was tempted for a winter restoration project...........but it dawned on me quite quickly the cost of a new set of...

A.I. this is amazing but scary

OK here's the original Now here's a young Paul McCartney singing it with John and George added. I'm sure eventually AI will turn the world into the Terminator or the Matrix if we don't beat them to it but this is just cool! Is everyone else a bit torn on what to think with A.I, too?

    Is it mandatory?

Purely tongue in cheek and a rhetorical question......but I'm playing in the centre of Liverpool tomorrow night. Is it bad form not to take the Black Oyster Ludwig out?

    Silent Stage Gig

Got my first one in three weeks and seeing if anyone here has had the "pleasure" of doing one. If not it's a warning for where gigging is headed. If you don't know, everything is DI'd through the house PA and the actual noise comes out of directional speakers above the dance floor so unless...

    House V Drums?

Had a gig contract come through for a couple of weeks' time for a function gig of some sort and oddly the venue are providing full PA, a sound engineer (completely unheard of in my line of work!) and they requested we use their V-drums. I've not got a problem with this as I've just gotta take...

The coolest thing I have ever seen at a gig ever

Wedding season kicked off for me on Saturday. Rocked up at the venue and Hire a Spitfire is now a thing. Guy built it from all 1940s parts and you could sit in the cockpit. Sadly my boyhood dreams were shattered when I was told I was too big to get in because I wouldn't be able to get out...
