Snare wire should lay flat correct?

I noticed that the wires I just installed on a refurb project are not lying flat against the head where the wires connect to the plate. I am using straps to mount it. Just seems unusual. I would expect it to be flat

Hmm is it buzzing when you set them tight?

I think I can see it but then I’m not sure.

Fitting wires is a pain but if you had another set of wires you could see if they look the same.

Perhaps they’re overtightened and it’s causing the end plates to angle? Or they’ve previously been stretched to that point and now they have bent and sit like that.

All of that is possible.. I will see what it sounds like. I used theses because I had them.. I may need to pick something else up. The most buzz free drum I have is a Steel shell Yamaha with stock wires. I need to go find those... LOL

Yeah, i kinda see the problem. I used Puresound for a season but went back to stock Tama snappies, and Fat Cat snappies for adustable wire decay.

The Starclassic snappy shown applies pressure to the wires when the strap is threaded under/up/around the metal bridge.

Lately I’ve been in the mindset of having them lay flat. Sometimes my snare drum doesn’t sound as good that way, but I get less sympathetic buzz. Usually if I add a little dampening to the batter head, the snare drum sounds better though. Also, I try to stick with 20 strand wires, there’s probably a reason why they become stock on most snares.

wait you guys look under there when the snares are on?
how the heck you do that with mirrors?

ok I just got down on my knees. On a 65 Gretsch wood snare they're faily new 20s and they're flat engaged
lemme go check the brass.
Yep. Brass snare 20 wires snare's engaged lay flat too.

If they’re lifting, try loosening and reseating the straps. Make sure the snare bed’s not too shallow. Cords might give you better control.

Go to your local pawn shop and find the cheapest, off-brand snare wires you can find. Those always sound the best to my ears.
