Solving Paiste for jazz

That's right, I think. He uses 602 Classic medium hats (14), Masters Dark ride and Crash/Ride, Masters Dry Ride, 602 flat, and a Masters crash. I think he also has Masters hats (14).

That DeJohnette comparison is a good one regarding cymbals, too, because DeJohnette's signature Sabians were always more piercing/bright than dark/complex, which is more a Paiste sound.
Twenty years ago I went on a search for a complete set of the first gen Dejohnette dark/dry unlathed Sabians for a particular project. Just couldn’t find them. Before Hazelshould and Reverb. Ended up with the first gen K Special Dry instead. Still have em and still love em. Sabians still in my mind occasionally.

I wonder which Sound Creation is the 602 ME China based on? I've heard that the 602 ME ride has got elements of SCDR in it.

Playing around with a 20” Signature Dry Crisp ride today. This cymbal has a good, clean “Morelloesque” stick definition with a nice medium low wash underneath but never gets out of control. Nice bell. It has a hint of the Rough ride complexity in its overtones but sits nicely with other instruments. A real contender.

I had a Big Band gig for 10 or so years and used a lot of Paiste cymbals for that gig some of my favourites were :
Hihats :
14” Dimensions Thin/Heavy model
14” 602 Soundedge

Rides :
20” Traditional Medium Heavy
20” 602 Medium ride
22” 602 Medium Ride

I loved the 20” Traditional Medium Light Swish

Man, those Dimensions Thin/Heavy are great aren’t they? I have a set.

Popping back in to say that 9 months later I am still loving my Paistes for jazz. Had some cats over at the shop earlier to work out some ideas and the Swiss metal was just absolutely jammin.

15” Big Beat hats
20” Signature Traditional thin
22” Signature Rough Ride
22” Masters Swish

Anyone else banging on Paistes for trad jazz gigs lately?
