How about the blond?

Huh. None of my kits have different edges than the toms.
Take G-brand for instance since 6 ply era (at least) BD has different (as does snare) edge than the toms

what'd you do there; that's Not Legal in some states..

Make this a Poll

I decided to remove the original matching lacquered hoops and installed these Gibraltar blond maple hoops. Long ago I dropped my 1984 Tama Superstar cherry wine bass drum and cracked one of the matching hoops so that episode always plays on my head.

So the originals live in a closet nice and safe now. This look is growing on me.
That kit would look spectacular with those blond wood hoops on the entire kit, not just the bass drum.

I never owned a Gretsch. I know a few manufacturers offer a different edge, I just never had issues with the regular one. Surprised me that you did!

Those look good. Of course I thought this thread was about those fabulous female creatures, so when I saw blonde and redheads (my personal favorites) I was probably swayed by what I was thinking. Those hoops give those drums a modern look. I do prefer black on some kits. It just looks right. I have actually done exactly what @Bozozoid did... glued some back together. But I'm also a heathen and like the chromed metal hoops on some MIJ kits. I like the blonde hoops on the red kit.

and Let me clarify a position ..
the Rogers set above at a quick glance looks like it could be a wrap. As in pearl covered (they aren't I know..I've been told)

Now Gretsch (you may have heard of them - some of their historic vintage 60s sets go for $11,000 these days but I digress....

Since the mid 80s a new factory Nitron (that's pearl covered to you out there) Gretsch set could be ordered with...you guessed it... blonde hoops (not the lacquered sets just the wrapped ones)

exhibit A 80s catalog pictured Power Grand Prix black nitron with the blonde hoops-

God I love that pic..

being the Rogers are a lacquer set that gives no reason to shame the blonde hoops on this Rogers set
and snicker 'bleached blonde', behind it's back..

😁

I had a black ludwig kit that I customized by putting blonde hoops on the BD. It was cool for months but inside my aesthetic sensibilities were bothered. Put the solid black back on and breathed a sigh of relief wondering what got into me.

blonde hoops are like a business move; you know the drum is going to get knocked around; like a protective guard from step ons by guitar players; they're a Blocking move.
That's why I put them on- and they make a nice contrast with covered/pearl covered drums.
I wouldn't put the blonde hoops on a lacquered kit unless the lacquer was a solid color and not showing any grain.
But on flashy marine pearls and sparkles yeah
it tells the folks "hey underneath that pearl it's wood. see the hoops?"

this "2pc" set I still have (ha) got use in a variety 50's Swing band where the clarinet player would cross to and fro across the front line passing sheet music out, the blondes protected from his size 11 wingtips magnificently

like to get a matching Red Glitter RB something for floor tom another 16x16
or a 14x20 and turn into another 20/12/16
