Sonor SQ2 maple - thin vs medium

Hey everyone,

I’m in the process of replacing my Mapex Saturn III, and I’m ordering a Sonor SQ2 kit. I need some advice on maple shell thickness—I’m currently torn between Thin and Medium shells. I also briefly considered Vintage thickness, but I’m not sure if there’s a strong reason to choose SQ2 over the ProLites if I go that route.

Here’s my situation:
  • I’ve decided on the following sizes: 10×8, 12×9, 14×13, 16×15, 22×16 (or possibly 22×17)
  • I’ll be using Coated Ambassadors on top and Clear Ambassadors for reso heads
  • I play fusion/rock music
  • My biggest influences in terms of playing style and sound are Dave Weckl, Gavin Harrison, Steve Smith, and Benny Greb
  • The kit will live in my home room, which is currently untreated—but I’m planning to add acoustic treatment and build a small home studio setup
  • The kit will be used primarily for practice and home recording—I’m looking for something versatile
  • Live gigs are rare, and if they do happen, they’ll be in small venues. I’m not a professional drummer
My snare is a Sonor Benny Greb Beech snare, and I use Sabian HHX Complex and Evolution cymbals.

I don’t need tons of volume, (actually the less volume the better) but I’m considering Medium shells since I’ve read they’re a “safe choice”. That said, I’m wondering if Thin shells might be better suited for me.

What would you choose in my situation—Thin or Medium maple shells?

Is there any real benefit to choosing Vintage thickness on an SQ2 over just getting a ProLite? However, I got a decent offer and prolites will be similar price to sq2.

Thanks so much!

I would go thin Maple or even better.. Birch toms Maple kick.. thin is 5mm, medium is 6mm and the Prolite/SQ2 Vintage shell is 4mm with 2mm rings. .. Kicks you can only get vintage, medium or heavy.

No benefit sonically on going with SQ2 Vintage vs Prolite but you do get your choice of many more finishes and sizes.

Make sure you are not paying anywhere near the SQ2 configurator price... If you are .. keep shopping around IMO.
