Just a couple of pics for now

I'm still updating, rearranging, and awaiting some minor pieces of hardware, and the new music room has no lighting yet so the pictures aren't great, but here's where I am with my kit. It's mostly how I think it will stay for now, although having a double bass setup for the first time ever comes with challenges. The cymbals will be moved around a bit, and I'd like to get the hi hats closer to the left bass drum so the hh pedal isn't such a stretch. I spent a couple of hours today replacing some heads and eliminating sympathetic buzz from the main snare.

The very short history is that this started as a five-piece kit 26 years ago, and then things happened. And then recently, some more things happened.

big kits rule!!!! Bring it on...

Great kit! I have a question about your aux hat mount. Is that an attachment that connects to a regular cymbal arm? Thanks

That's awesome looking! Kinda makes me long for my old double bass kits. 😁

Hi Hat positioning with that layout is one of the challenging parts of a big kit. The smallest tom to the left and the hat want to be in the same space. I tried the Simon Phillips style but ended up more Neil Peart. I had to move that small tom up out of the way!

That's a Gibraltar X-Hat adapter, one of the few non-PDP pieces of hardware on the kit. It screws onto the end of a standard cymbal stand and holds a pair of hats and allows you to set the distance between the hats to get the sound you want, whether it's a closed chick or a washy swish or whatever. The plan was to eventually replace it with a remote cable hat stand so that I could actually control them with a pedal, but I ran out of feet somewhere along the way.

Wow.

Looks like a second matching kit came your way. Might be time to start shopping for a rack.;) Killer. (y)

Is that kit for gigging or is that a semi-permanent home kit?

One-hunnert percent permanent home kit.

Wow.

The slightly longer story is the Pacific EZ kit was discontinued pretty quickly after its introduction in 1999, and by the time Pacific (by then rebranded as PDP) named another set "EZ" a few years later, they started used different hardware. Specifically, the lugs from the original EZ kit were never to be seen again. Last year I was searching online for just the old lugs, and someone was selling a four-piece shell kit of the original EZ set, and it even had my matching red wine wrap. I really only wanted the lugs and the rest of the hardware, but I figured that I could somehow make use of the old wrap or in some other way find a purpose for the old shells. Well... here's the purpose that I found for them. I never intended to have a double bass kit, or to have that many toms, and now I do. I've always loved stupidly big kits, so I'm like a dumb kid on Christmas morning every time I walk into the new music room. Funny how things work out.

How is it that I can sit behind a kit like yours and sound nothing like Simon or Neil. Then I move to a 4 piece and imitate Ringo/Charlie like crazy. I don't understand this. 😥

I like those cymbals.. Definitely.. wow excellent

Thank you, kind sir. I've been a Zildjian fanboy for about 45 years, and It was an incredible honor to take possession of a few of those directly from the hands of Paul Francis, and to meet a couple of the artists who gave input into their design.

that Far-right K Custom..what.. and size?
Give a cymbal run down and story of each (then send me two ;)

Without getting back into the old Big Kit vs. Small Kit debate, in my mind the secret is to remember that inside every big kit is the smallest kit that you are comfortable playing. Focus on the snare, bass, hi hat, and ride. Play exactly what feels good to you on just those four. Then as you settle in, expand your vision outwards and only incorporate what works for the music.

Or do like I do and flail around like a spastic ten-year-old who was left unsupervised with Terry Bozzio's kit.

Far right is a 17" K Custom Hybrid Crash. Apologies for the initial lack of additional info, this was just supposed to be a quick update before the massive actual update with all the boring details. I've been working on so many projects for the last several months that the drum kit has taken a back seat, and I just wanted to get a couple of quick pics up as an update. Unnecessarily big update coming soon.

(And whose signature is that peeking out below? And why hasn't my tech cleaned those grubby fingerprints off yet?)

Well, you gotta know that a teaser will only result in more pics and lots more deets! :)

Your persistence paid off. Great story.(y)
