New guy, 64 in December. I've hit the drums since 22, though once played dreams by fleetwood when I was 13 or so, nice tune.
My father is far more interesting, born 1909, led all kinds of orchestras, comedy dance, Latin, swing or strings. He was a real good composer, and accomplished 1930s, to about 1971, short an occasionally stint with talent already taken by alcohol, and life. He worked with everyone from micky rooney to sammy, coast to coast and overseas. I knew him leading a string orchestra, he played with them, sporting tuxedos, throughout the 60s. He played drums well enough, on a strings recording for instance. Krupa's drummer was in my dads swing band too, don't know his name but yes, Krupa liked to conduct sometimes.
Skips a generation. Sure I played this or that before my 11th bday, took another path....dang it JK. Bought my last drum set early 2000s, a used Pearl MRX. Real nice cymbals too, I recognized the set was better than I was, but sometimes it just clicks, gets easier with age.
Never sat behind a band, no lesson, don't read often if at all, that part seems pretty easy to me, and besides, I'm too lazy to sit down in that respect. I just want my headphones in a stereo led by music files, a drink and a puff of plants. Recovered my favorite 70s blacklight posters for my young room, nice wall. I suppose I'm a loner sometimes, pick your spots.
My thumbs hurt, wrists, life -
Lots of heavy tasks over the years...one of the last being I restored my vintage chevy to concours , it really is so nice. First and last time thanks, but I recorded every piece and assembly, so I know to build a 67 to 72 gm, short most cores, body, and finishes that is.
Anyway, 40 years on the drums I finally learned light with the sticks is so more better. Out of necessity and a sparkle of thought, no longer do sticks hurt my hands, and my play maybe twice what it was as a result - I'm slow that way, fk me, dang it...JK.
In that respect, my talent is at least improving while my father's was used up by the time he was my age. Otherwise no comparison, skips a generation.
Back to pearl mrx, three toms on a stand, I tighten heads finger tight, then perhaps a qtr turn or so with a torque key, sound about right? Course I tune them, but the key does a nice job its own right. Suggestions appreciated, I really am pretty green.
Seems I can play a metal snare faster than my maple mrx, hmm, why might that be? Wont swear to it......Can't think what my snare skins are, nice common stuff, white. How tight should a 6 ply maple snare be, suggestions appreciated...
