I don't think it's ever a good thing to go back to a band you previously departed. I did it once. All the same problems that prompted my first departure remained unchanged.
I have an "open invitation" to return to one band I left years ago. I was the 2nd drummer / percussionist. While I...
I'm pretty good at tuning drums. Armed with nothing but a drum key, I can feel the head tension and get it pretty much in the ballpark without even ever using my ears.
I'm good at improvisation and can normally play an unfamiliar song good enough that nobody in the audience knows.
I'm a...
We've discussed this before. It's the same for me. Drumming isn't a huge expense for me because I already have just about all the gear I'll ever need (about 2-1/2 full drum kits). I don't play that much, am currently not in a band, so I don't need to replace sticks and heads very often...
I'm a HUGE Golden Earring fan. The band disbanded in 2021 due to George's affliction with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). Very sad! I always love the way the two equally talented lead vocalists (Barry Hay and George Kooymanns) would trade off vocal lead roles in order to serve the song. If...
Yep. My latest reserve deputy re-certification mentioned the same thing. I guess it's good to be a drummer. You can accurately time your compressions better than most people. :)
Smarter minds than mine can explain exactly why drums sound better out front than from the driver's seat. All I know is it's true. The "high-pitched" tom, the "ringy" snare drum, and the "boomy" bass drum sound absolutely fantastic out on the dance floor.
All great questions. In a nutshell, my taste in snare drum sound is fickle, emotionally-driven, and ever-changing. :)
Brass (and steel) have a nice "ping" that lingers for a split second behind the "crack". I really like that sound; always have. Every once in a while, I like the drier sound...
My "favorite" just changed. Now it's my Pearl Sensitone Elite brass 5" x 14". My aluminum Sensitone is set aside in a case like yesterday's weather forecast! :)
There's still money to be made for those willing to do what others won't.
I was talking to a group of guys recently. They were talking about their respective jobs/careers. One of the dudes proudly stated "I run a small septic tank cleaning service" and sported the widest grin I'd ever seen...
I didn't watch the video but I think your analysis is spot on. It's simple supply and demand. There's a huge supply of competent musicians and very little demand.
I was at an outdoor festival last month. A buddy asked "What do you think of the band?" I replied "Far better than any band...
I have restored some old Sensitone snares, but nothing this bad. If it were mine, I'd try to save all the hardware, even if it means soaking it in solvent for a month. I used to use a concoction called "Ed's Red"; a homemade solvent with mixed results. I omitted the acetone due to safety...
I don't really LIKE the Blues, but I'm actually pretty good playing them. If the band is firing on all cylinders and the audience is digging it, I'm happy playing Blues tunes even though I'm not a fan.
Decades ago, I was suffering from pain in both my wrists. I thought for sure it was from drumming. After some time, I discovered the cause: It was the way I was carrying drum and hardware cases. I'd literally sling a bass drum over my shoulder and let my wrist flex WAAAY back, trying to...
Agreed. I think by and large; we do support all members' musical endeavors, videos and breaking news. I just don't like clicking links to other sites. I have rural internet. It doesn't take much to bog it down.
Sometimes we can be a "tough crowd". Years ago I posted what I thought was...
Sorry to hear about your Dad.
My younger brother survived a heart attack just after he'd run a marathon. Fortunately his friends knew immediately what was happening and rushed him to the ER. He's fine now.
