What's your favorite snare drum TODAY?

IMG_4353.jpeg

This is not quite the current setup, but this is the current drum. I've been recording some prog tunes this week, and this 5x14 cast bronze DW with the hex-eared N&C cast hoops has proved a winner once again!

I'm taking this drum to the grave.

Last year around this time, my submission to this thread was my old 1941 Ludwig & Ludwig 7x14 snare - ‘Ol’ Whitey’

I think that “favorite” pick was arrived at more for sentimental reasons than for practical. This thread got bumped and I got to thinking about the question from a different angle - What’s my favorite working drum? Ol’ Whitey is a character drum, to be used sparingly and carefully. Not a workhorse.

Workhorse favorite is my DW True Sonic. It “borrows” heavily from Rogers Dynasonic and Powertone CoB snare drums. I love it so much that I bought a second, identical drum just to take as my spare gig drum. Crisp and articulate yet somehow fat and wet at the same time. Doesn’t make sense on paper.

None of it has to make sense, that's part of the beauty of it. We just like to translate from imagination to reality by hitting these things, and spend our money on it to give us what we feel is the best way to do so.

For me though, it's one of the few things that actually do make sense. Great purchase! Now I feel I need one of those as well.

I generally prefer brass for metal snare drums. That said, what prompted your decision? Just like the tone better? Do you feel the aluminum one is lacking something you want?
All great questions. In a nutshell, my taste in snare drum sound is fickle, emotionally-driven, and ever-changing. :)

Brass (and steel) have a nice "ping" that lingers for a split second behind the "crack". I really like that sound; always have. Every once in a while, I like the drier sound of aluminum.

too short hard to relax the piccolo quick response piccolo the long notes aren't very long.
I can't use them not enough space too hyper
other than that I have 1 4x14 for 25 (ok unknown maybe 35) years still have it Have taken it out just no desire to anymore and I like the look don't like the voice too quick and too short can't relax with it

Alternately.... an 8 x14 would probably have <<<me>>> Falling Asleep.. 🛏️💤

A glass snare.....not mine.
and the one I have to use all the time...since I can't make acoustic sound no mo.
Actually....it triggers great. Sheet metal shell.
I hope I haven't broken the thread protocol with the "e" thing.K&S Glass Drum full round glass.jpg7-18-25 SA e snare.jpg

How do you like the Evans mesh heads?

What's going on with the dials?
"Increase Tempo" ?
"Reduce Suck Factor" ?

Well today/tonight my favourite is a Dunnett maple solid shell 14 x 6.5 fitted with wood hoop which when put together sounds great tuned up really high, prefect for delivering mellow aggression. I suppose I should get a snare side wood hoop to balance the looks. But doubt the one on the bottom will make much difference to the sound. A9328202-9FE0-40E1-A32C-4A9175C9EBC4.jpeg

I like the Evans. Feels close to a real head....for me.
The "dials"...are knobs for potentiometers for adjusting gain for zones 1 and 2.
Are we hijacking yet?
To access tempo and non-suck......you have to plug in a jack near the "dials"...and connect it to a Synsonics.
