Amid the news of drum shops closing in the U.K. (and in the U.S.) thanks to tub-thumping Internet shopping enthusiasts, a "Drummer's Paradise" has opened in the St. Louis area. The frosted-tipped owner, a Son of a Drummer, promises a good hang and "drum-e-oke." Wishing them all the best in this new venture.

The brand new Max Maxwell's Drum Shop is a drummer's paradise

JEFFERSONVILLE, In. (WDRB) - Max Maxwell is drumming up some excitement in Jeffersonville.

WDRB's Keith Kaiser made a visit to the brand new Max Maxwell's Drum Shop.

Local entrepreneur, and one of the founding members of The Crashers, Max Maxwell, has created a destination for drummers.

The shop features a selection of drums, percussion instruments, and accessories. Additionally, there will be opportunities for drummers to learn from the best.

The Drum Shop is a continuation of the Maxwell family’s rich musical legacy.

Max’s father, Marvin Maxwell, is known as an outstanding drummer.

The Maxwell family has inspired countless musicians and spread the love of music throughout the community.

Max Maxwell began drumming at 10 years old, and professionally at 13. He wanted to create a place for community nights, drum clinics, “drum-e-oke”, and other special events.

Max’s brother and Crashers bandmate, Mark Maxwell, operates Maxwell’s House of Music (a full-service music store) just across the courtyard from Max Maxwell’s Drum Shop.

This brings the two brothers together again to share their expertise and passion for music gear, education, and their community.

The grand opening of Max Maxwell’s Drum Shop happened on Friday, June 20, 2025.

Good to know!

Louisville area, not St Louis, is the actual start point for Lewis & Clark expedition. It started across the river from Louisville in Indiana, what is now Clarksville, IN. The expedition, with Lewis, Clark and the recruits, departed from what is now Clarksville, Indiana, on October 26, 1803. Lewis and Clark met in Louisville to officially form their partnership and plan the expedition. Clark recruited members of the Corps of Discovery, including the "Nine Young Men from Kentucky", in the Louisville and Clarksville area. The Clarksville site, also known as "Clark's Point" at the Falls of the Ohio is where the expedition's initial preparations and recruitment took place. I ride my bike over there occasionally.

But, St Louis is a LOT bigger city now than Louisville. The 'Ville, as we call it, is a big small city. No pro sports. Fewer music venues. Our "pro" sport is University of Louisville basketball lol. All of the cities that grew up near Louisville are bigger: Indy, Cincy, Nashville, and St Louis.
The sunny side of the river, as Indiana across river from Louisville calls itself, is home to the famous sax player and ambassador of all things jazz Jamey Aebersold.

University of Louisville has an outstanding jazz program.

Yeah bourbon industry has spent a ton$$ on building an image the last ten or so years, modeling bourbon after wine. I don't think it is in same league - corn vs hills of vineyards and grapes, but the industry has been very successful in re-imaging bourbon and selling the sizzle and nostalgia. Lots of bourbon tasting goes on here.

My dad was in the horse industry for 25+ years at a thoroughbred farm just down I-64 from Louisville in Lexington: Gainesway Farm. Of course Churchill Downs and KY Derby are here. Chiurchill Downs now looks more like a casino than the historic racing venue of old. They're ready for legalized gambling (slots, cards, etc), should state legislature ever approve it.

My girlfriend had mentioned wanting to visit Louisville, so now I guess that means we have to go.

Yeah man, the world can use a couple more drum shops. I wish him all the best! Feels like a good location within the nation.

Max, get some cool good stuff. People will travel for it if they also think it's cool.

That error's on me. Whoopsie.

It does raise the question of what makes these two river towns distinct? Basketball vs. baseball? Bourbon vs. beer? What else?
Didn't you mean "That error's on Son of Vistalite Black"...? :D

I think they bought the initial inventory from another drum/ music store in Indiana. Then, moving it all to another location. Not sure about what kinda store it will be - I don't expect Fork's or DCP or Memphis-like store. Those kinda inventories take a huge multi-million dollar investment.

The store Max got inventory from wasn't anything special - they did on-line drop shipping from distributor warehouses and didn't carry anything special in the store.

I see they have their dad's old fiberglass kit on display in the new store. Built for LOUDNESS.

Hoping it develops as a local resource for drummers. Man, that's a tough niche market. How do you compete against giants like Sweetwater?
