New for 2011, the Gretsch Energy drum set package comes complete with hardware and Sabian SBR cymbals. The toms feature “quick” sizes, which provide punchy tones and allow for lower positioning to benefit younger drummers. Hardware is double braced and includes stylized Gretsch Energy pedal boards. The 30 degree bearing edges, 5 Lug configuration and Gretsch style lug draw from the rich Gretsch lineage. The Gretsch Energy series is perfect for the first time buyer and packed with features that are found on semi-pro drum sets, including non-drilled bass drum.


New for 2011, the Gretsch Renegade series is a complete drum set package designed specifically for the entry-level drummer and packed with value. Toms have “quick” sizes, which provide punchy tones and allow for lower positioning that benefits younger drummers. Hardware is double-braced and includes stylized Gretsch Renegade pedal boards and a comfortable drum throne. 13” hi-hats and 18” crash/ride brass cymbals are also included. All shells are 9-ply basswood with 45-degree bearing edges. Other features include ball-style tom holders, adjustable bass drum spurs and metal BD hoops with matching inlay.

Did they finally drop the Blackhawk line?
Those new kits look like a good idea for entry level.
They really should do away with the 5 lug tom though.
They needed something to compete with Tama, Pearl and Sonor in the entry market.
These kits should do that for Gretsch.

Edit; I see that they still have the Blackhawk listed. I don't know why they just don't do away with them.
 
I saw that. The Hawk should fly off into the sunset! :)
They should offer a 14 floor tom option on the new kits too.
 
I saw the Renegade + cymbals, etc. package listed $499 free shipping at American Musical Supply (?) and you can make 4 monthly payments. From the photos it looks like an excellent option for the entry level person. Hard to beat that deal.

I have no problem tuning them. I have a 12 inch 5 lugger.
It's just a silly remnant of the past. I don't see any nostalgia in 5 lug hoops.
The other thing is that it is hard to find replacement hoops. Say you wanted to try some wood hoops or something like that. I can buy Gibraltar wooden hoops anywhere for my 6 lug drums. I can trade hoops with my other kits.

+1 on the Fast sizes in the Renown line.
That would be nice. I like shallow toms. My ddrum maple toms are 7 inches deep.
 
Based on the recent news, I think Gretsch is paying more attention to entry level drums these days. Good for Gretsch, and this strategy will pay off in the long run.

The recent release of various micro kits including this Gretsch Energy micro kit and the future release of affordable Birch snare drums are a good start.

It's really not a new thing for Gretsch. For example, even Catalinas have been around a good number of years:

"The current-day Catalina line is the rebirth of a series of the same name made by Gretsch in the late 1930s, which consisted of only the Elite and Stage models."

The Nighthawks came out in the 60's.
 
These lower cost offerings have been around. It was discussed in other threads. My very first post on DW was about Gretsch Energy and Catalina Club. My point was about the recent trend in marketing messaging which seems to stress high end offerings as well as lower end.

That is ok. Not taking this personal at all. Sometime it is hard to get the point across in writing. People may interpret what is written different way.
Agree, disagree, add new information. That is the point of discussions in forums.
