Restoring a Pearl World Series partial kit

I referred to this here but wanted to properly post about the process. Despite the conditions I found the kit in, the bearing edges are intact, the shells are in round, and they're cleaning up nicely. I'd taken the snare drum home before picking up the rest of it, and cleaned it up- better care was taken of it than the rest of the kit, so it only needed minor rust pits removed and fresh heads & wires. It looks brand new and plays great.

I've fallen into a side hobby lately- cleaning/repairing dirty/damaged drums and drum hardware. The first 2 pics are the "after" of the 13" rack tom and its hoops (not yet reassembled because it needs a part); I forgot to take "before" pics of the caked-on dust and tarnished chrome hoops & lugs that equaled that on the bass drum (shown in the other pics), plus the rust pits that were on the hoops. The insides of the drums aren't bad, despite a mouse nest that was in the blankets that were in the bass drum (it/they got in through the microphone port in the front head while it was in storage). I don't see any rust on the bass drum hardware; most of the repair labor will be on that nasty hoop claw (I don't know if that's rust, mouse funk, or what). I'll follow up with "after" pics of the bass drum when it's done. I've ordered a matching 10" tom but I've been unable to find a matching 16" floor tom to complete the 10/13/16/22/6.5x14 kit. (There's a 12" for sale online, so if I find a matching 14" FT, I'll order the 12".) I may have to resort to an Export FT (or since it'd be non-matching, doesn't have to be Pearl- might as well be a stencil drum unless I luck into another birch/mahogany shell in black from another brand).

This started some time back when I was gifted a snare drum that needed work, so I researched how to do it properly so I wouldn't make it worse, and was happy with the results. Then I thought I was going to have to restore my bandmate's son's HEAVILY rusted drums and stands (I didn't mind- "Sound Source" stencil kit) to use at band rehearsals in my bandmate's garage; I'd brought one of my kits temporarily but wanted to get it out before peak season temps. In the meantime, I'd taken his snare drum and a couple of stands home to repair, and unbeknownst to me, my bandmate gave the rest of the son's kit (he had lost interest) to a friend's kid. I still refurbed the stuff I had and I'm using it now, & brought some of my stuff home. I then began seeking a "beater" kit that I wouldn't mind keeping at the garage; I've been through two because after cleaning/repairing, I've realized I could sell them for more than I paid. 🤷‍♂️😁 (The Ddrum and PDP kits I posted in the Latest Purchase thread several months ago.) I'm not selling the pictured drums, but I'll soon be starting on an entry-level Ludwig kit, if anyone's interested. If any of you have any neglected drums & hardware and want to unload 'em cheap or hire me to refurbish them for you, let me know! (For the latter, I suppose you'd have to be in eastern North Carolina; I don't wanna ship a kit anywhere, even at someone else's expense; hardware, I wouldn't mind.)

The 10" arrived today- with the same heads as the 13" (Pinstripe batter and stock reso- which, weirdly, still sound great with plenty of sustain on both toms), and in much better shape than these were in. I'll still clean/polish but that one will be easy work.

I've gotta say, I've never been a fan of black drums, but that 13" shined up so nice with just a light dry rub with a microfiber cloth and then some Pledge (as did the one bass drum hoop I've done so far- the one with what was likely mouse poop and/or mud from its/their feet - it has a lot of chipped paint so I'm going to touch it up with acrylic paint), that I'm looking forward to seeing them completed and set up.

You may have said it and I missed it but if you end up having to replace any parts you can get knockoffs with the same style and hole pattern really cheap from dfd.

I didn't, but thanks! I only need one swivel nut; 2112 Percussion in Raleigh NC is freaking awesome for all things drummy- I love that place- but they didn't have a matching one. I bought the closest thing they had but the square head is slightly too big. Rather than drive another 45 min. each way to return it, I think I'm just gonna file it down until it fits. They also had the generic matching lugs but they were the spring style, not the nylon insert style as these are.

Sooooo, does anyone have a lead on a 16" FT, or a 14" rack or floor, in Piano Black? From the Pearl Drummer's Forum post @I-P 's linked (very helpful, thanks! The sizes of my drums are in red):

------------------------------------------
I'd also love to get a 10x14 or 12x14, but I imagine they're pretty rare. If I get a 14" of any sort, I'll order the 12" I found online. Otherwise, I'll just find a 16" and roll with 10/13/16. I'd also love to get the wood snare.

Well, I procrastinated too long; the 12" is sold. ☹️

Update: reassembly is imminent. Not pictured: the BD hoops cleaned up as nicely as the shell, but still has exposed wood where it was chipped (and one spot on the side of the shell), which I'll touch up with acrylic paint soon. Funny- the claws were stuck to the hoop; it had the stock heads on it still (!), so I suspect the claws have been in place since 1985, so some of the chipped paint occurred as I was disassembling. And speaking of the claws- I realize I have them shown below in a position that it can't be seen, but those two that were on the bottom of the reso side, on that same nasty hoop- shown in the OP- cleaned up mint, as did all the others; nicer than the lugs shown below. I was surprised. I'm also likely going to use some key-headed BD tension rods and bag & stow away these T-handle rods.

The 10" arrived in great shape; I'll still clean it up but may not disassemble it to do so. I'll just not use the brass bristle brush on the hardware, so as to keep it off the shell finish.

Looks like we both made a good deal!
I recently found an almost mint condition World Series of the first generation, almost for free.
Cleaned them up, changed heads, and I just love'em!!

Nice, nice nice. They are really good sounding drums with the right heads. Took me a little time to find the right head and tuning combo on mine, but when I did; out the front of house... HUGE Toms... Awesome!

Found matching 12" and 16" toms recently; now the kit is complete! 10/12/13/16/22/14s. It's been my rehearsal kit for about 6 months in 10/13/16 config (new/old stock 16" wood/fiberglass reissue in matching finish, that I'll now sell).

Mine was so solid! the only thing that kept breaking were the swivel nuts in the lugs. I ended up replacing them all to fix it. They are built really well overall. I bought mine new in 1985, 9 piece double bass in black. I still have some of it too.

BTW, be sure to pick up some Pearl Air Suspension Feet for the floor tom tom. I was amazed years ago how they really opened up my WLX when I installed them.

No doubt they work as advertised, but I already get/have gotten more sustain than necessary from every floor tom I've ever owned. I tune toms medium-low with the resos a bit higher - very lively. (y)

Great job. I’ve cleaned up quite a lot of kits, mostly to resell. All the polishing is just really hard on my hands so I am avoiding it now.

It’s terrible the way so many people treat their drums, you are doing a good thing, showing these instruments the respect they deserve.

Those are nice drums. Pearl is my second favorite brand of drums. I play Pearl drums at church, and they sound good. May they give you years of musical joy. Peace and goodwill.
