John Bonham

I'd say John Bonham owes quite a bit to Jimmy Page's production skills. That's not to say Bonzo wasn't a monster... possibly "the" monster in regard to rock drumming. But Page's production skills really made his drums just leap out of the grooves of Zeppelin's LPs.

The thing about Bonham was that I get the feeling that quite possibly the best was yet to come. He sadly left us way too soon.

Ted Nugent:

"Kieth Moon, Janice Joplin, Jimmy Hendrix... incredible musicians. They all did drugs and they're dead. I didn't and I'm still Ted."
Interesting to ponder where his career might have gone if he was still here. Session drummer? Band leader? Explorations out side of rock? Remain in Led Zeppelin ?

I would like to think that he would have been exploring outside of rock if he had lived because Zeppelin's music would have probably gotten boring for him as he grew older. But, nobody knows and he's not here to speak for himself so.....

Yeah it's fun to speculate where he would have gone. Buddy was a big influence on him. I saw Charlie Watts' big swing band years ago. I wouldn't be surprised if Bonham did something there. Though I wonder if he would have done many other projects but always kept a foot in Led Zeppelin. I mean what would 4 more Zeppelin LPs have even look like? Led Zeppelin died when John died.

In my opion one of the greatest drummers of all time, Fool In The Rain, When The Levee Breaks, Poor Tom all great grooves. Moby Dick...out of this world and Good Times Bad Times with all the triplets and his lightning fast foot. And D'yer Maker the very first Zeppelin song i could play. One thing i loved about John Bonham is that all his drums seem to fit in the song. Any other comments on John Bonham

p.s. My first post :)
yes yes n yes. funnily enough the 2nd reason i ever picked up sticks, mostly because I didn't understand technique or had not heard of him til I was 14.

I do not know if these clips were posted on this thread before or not.
These two clips analyze and discuss his technique.

What Makes John Bonham Such a Good Drummer?

The Genius Of John Bonham.

I had forgotten this one.....you are right sir....that JB kicks and grooves with chops on this song.
Led Zeppelin III......1970.

Probably the hardest Zep track to play in terms of single bass drum. There a full on bass drum triplets.

Obviously this is from the LZ 2 recording sessions, but is this common knowledge, or did I stumble on “unheard” Bonham goodness?
From the YouTube description:
"This is an edit using the latest hiss filtration tools to restore as closely as possible the original drum solo as it occurred in one sitting before the album version editing. They edited down the solo for better album running time and a lot of the drum solo was cut-out as a result. Compiled, edited, mixed and mastered by Brady Arnold in the Autumn of 2024."

I read the description underneath the video before I posted my question. I was just wondering if this uncut version was commonly known of by our members here. I'm shocked to hear it seeing as I'm a huge Bonham nerd.

When I first started playing drums in high school in the late 80s, I swore I wouldn't get a double pedal until I was as good as JB with a single pedal.

I've never owned a double pedal.
