The Drummer Exodus continues - Matt Cameron leaves Pearl Jam

As discussed in this and many other articles, Matt Cameron and Pearl Jam released separate statements indicating that he's stepping down from the band after 27 years on the throne. Did not see this one coming. No details (yet) on why, or the band's plans going forward.

I saw this video if their original drummer Dave Krusen sitting in with them in 2017, he sounded great. They should bring him back.

They sounded their best with Dave Abruzzese and Jack Irons (very different styles, but both great in their own way) but I doubt either will return. 😥
Dave was not included in the band roster that was inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame, and Jack's not doing touring gigs, so I think I agree with you. Never mind that Matt drummed for the band more than twice the years of all the others combined...
It would be funny if Josh Freese gets the gig.
I don't picture a guy with Josh's energy being the right fit for PJ - but then I think of some of their harder songs and I think "eh, maybe". I mean, the guy's played with every single other band in existence by now (except mine, but he's on speed-dial 1 if I ever break an arm).

Yeah, of the many drummers they've had, Dave Abruzzese may have the narrowest range but he's by far my favorite and, to my ears, works far, far better with/on the material from their first three albums, at least, and I'd love to hear him play the later stuff as well. But it's pretty clear they've no interest in ever working with him again.

Those also happen to be the most impactful and highest-selling albums in their discography, and those are the songs that get played on the classic/90s alternative stations. A lot of people think along those lines, and I'm defo not disagreeing with you. But I think he's more likely to take over as the Foo Fighters' drummer than to retake the PJ throne.

This is definitely a friendly split, and it seems they have known about it for a while. There were rumours during their tour a couple of months back, and the last show finished with champagne all round as they took their bows. Hugs and smiles all round. They even included Hunger Strike in the set.

FWIW Matt is my favourite of their drummers, and I listen to him play the songs on their official bootlegs far more than I listen to the studio albums.

:)

Dave Abruzzese back in the fold would be amazing but I think it's safe to say they're not too fond of each other. The drumming on VS is amazing

Josh can adapt to any band. He was Sting's drummer for several tours a few years ago. That being said, I doubt he'll be offered the PJ gig, at least not as a permanent member.

He was the best and it is not even close IMO.

I have a different take on that - I found his playing often to be fussy and unnecessarily frilly. I’ll give him credit for Vitalogy, which is one of my favourite albums, but I find his playing on. just as an example. MTV Unplugged to be dated in some way.

I much prefer Cameron and as you put it, it’s not even close.

Each to their own :)

27 years is a LONG time to be in a band. I've always enjoyed Matt's playing. It's good to see them splitting on friendly terms.

sure that is fine.. you like the more low key stuff and there is nothing wrong with that.

however if you have been monitoring coverage on the PJ drummers for a long, long time on YT and especially just going over the comments all over the place .. Dave A. is by far the favored drummer and it really is not even close. We just like somebody who steps it up several levels and comes up with tricky and creative fills.

I get that. As I mentioned, he's by far my favorite PJ drummer, but even so, I found his playing on the Unplugged session to be way too busy. As for dated, yeah, I think he's a great example of that early 90s kind of playing that was, to me, at least, a head-snapper at the time, but which does sorta place it in a specific period. I once saw a drummer refer to it as "hyper-masculine," which seems somehow very apt.

I think he was perfect for that part of PJ's journey because he had a more metal kind of sound, which helped them to place in along some of the other sounds that were really popular at the time and launched them forward. It wasn't where the rest of the band was headed, though; even if there hadn't been any other disagreements or differences between Dave and the rest of the band, I think their leaning towards the Neil Young kind of vibe would have either changed his approach or forced him out eventually. And I'll be honest, when he left I kind of stopped listening to them very much. And oddly enough, I was just watching a clip of them on Unplugged and I concur with you - IMO he was too loud and too busy. Someone forgot to tell him that everyone else was playing acoustics.

If he was too loud in the broadcast audio, it's the fault of the person who mixed it. :)
