How do you find contemporary music you like?

I work with a lot of younger 25 to 35ers and it's surprising at how many of them like the music from my youth - 70s and 80s. A lot of em seem to hate the 90s for some reason though.
The 90s were a bad time for music. Yes there was some good stuff, especially outside the mainstream, but by that time punk had killed AOR, new wave had killed punk, RNB had killed new wave, hair metal killed RNB, grunge killed hair metal, and the recording industry had a machine gun in each hand killing everyone the instant sales slid a bit, while trying to enact laws against taping or sharing music without paying up. It was a grim decade.

I love what Deco is doing with older songs.

As I move on through my life my tastes seem to move to older and older music. Most of my listening is mid 20th century now. I would probably listen to earlier stuff if not for the recording quality. A lot of current music has no connection for me.

This troubles me so I try and look up the zeitgeist. I listen to current music by :

1. Going to local gigs
2. Taking recommendations from friends
3. Listening to radio shows that promote new music

You can always Google best new band or best new album in any genre to check out stuff for a start.

Oh lordy no, for a few years now Google’s search results have been overtaken by AI generated nonsense. You’re as likely to find bands that don’t exist as to find the top selling hits of today, but unlikely to find anything else. The word “best” is especially misleading because the engine uses that to steer you to sites created based on Amazon reviews.

You know Bongoman I don't know which is more stupid-Humans or the AI humans created. I think there is the rub. Stupidly begets stupidity.

i have always felt that we are not at all ready to handle what has really been given to us by nature in this life...we just bumble along f-ing everything up...

I've discovered some artists by attending festivals and also seeing opening band for acts I already know. For example, I went to see Weezer last year and a band called White Reaper opened up. I was vey impressed with them and I have become a big fan. Years ago I saw a band called Passion Pit open up for Muse, I became a PP fan soon after. Lastly, in 1995 I saw a band called Tool up for Primus....you can guess the rest.

It’s frustrating when the charts and big commercial outlets seem to push the same predictable stuff, isn’t it? And yeah, the whole “meme song” thing has gotten murky with artists slapping that label on anything to grab attention. The real gems, like Baby Shark or What Does the Fox Say?, have that quirky, unpretentious charm that’s hard to replicate. Since you’re hunting for that kind of vibe, maybe try digging into some indie or niche dance genres on platforms like SoundCloud or Bandcamp, which are great for music distribution for labels looking to showcase unique, creative tracks. Artists there often have that playful, creative spark you’re looking for, without the overproduced polish of mainstream tracks. For instance, you might vibe with something like The Chicken Dance remixes for that silly, danceable energy or explore electro-swing groups like Caravan Palace—they’ve got this upbeat, retro-modern sound that’s super fun and clean, often promoted through innovative music distribution for labels seeking to stand out.

Some great stuff...some not so great. Many well known artists make their music available on Bandcamp.

Just about any genre.

Over the past 10 years, I have purchased over 700 albums on Bandcamp. The music is available in lossless FLAC format (as well as MP3). Many albums are also available on CD (usually CD-R).

There is so much good music from the 60s, 70s, 80s. These are my primary years where I dig these days, not really contemporary! A lifetime won't be enough to go through these 3 decades only. I wonder why I would spend time in contemporary when It's possible to live in the past? 😁 (not true)

I like the progressive metal of today, made with computers, super high fidelity recordings, this HI-Fi music is pleasant to listen to. But like I said in my previous post, on the Radio, they give me original "indie" music at night.
