I sell my stuff almost exclusively through Reverb. If I have something larger, like a kit, I've gone that used music store route a couple times. I figured by the time I actually packed, boxed, and shipped a kit, I would probably be losing money anyway. The music store near my house says they will pay 50% of the price that they expect to sell. Right or wrong that is their policy.
Now, I do not know how they come up with a reasonable "expected price to sell".
I once got a reasonable quote from Bentley's drum shop but it was for a brand new snare not any used item.
I typically sell cymbals or snares I don't need anymore through Reverb. A lot easier to post a fair price and ship those myself. Since I primarily buy used as well, I usually make my money back from selling cymbals. I THINK I'm done buying now though. I don't have THE set of cymbals but I have plenty to get me through any situation I've played in.
