I think that the majority of members are in both forums, so I don't know how different a merged forum might be. There might be a few members who leave - I guess they'll show us! - but I believe that the overall vibe would be pretty much the same.
I'm a member of both (and some other surviving...
Wow, this thread is 20 years old and I'm just seeing it for the first time! (I also moved it from"Introduce Yourself" to "General Discussion")
Music- big band (Gene Krupa), The Beatles, other pop music on the radio c1964.
Drummer- Gene Krupa, Ringo, Hal Blaine.

That's not over-production, it's lack of musicianship. Typically, a band has to actually play their parts in front of an audience. That's where they help build exposure and longevity. And make money. It's certainly not from dismal record sales, no matter how over-produced and perfect the music...
Not aware of that pedal's status, but it's a really nice pedal, and I've owned a bunch (DW, Trick, Pearl, Tama, Axis, Yamaha, Sonor, Taye, Rogers, other Ludwigs & more.) I hope it's still available!

Agreed, most 'things' are more expensive. Unfortunately they often outpace the rise in salaries and that's hardly limited to musicians.
I would disagree with Mikyok's assertion that "the pay has stayed the same since the 1970s!" My pay for local gigs is about 5-7 times higher than it was in...
Thanks!
Much fun at the Garden, and lots of other high-profile venues on this tour. Funny how 40+ years down the line and even without a current album, we're doing some of the biggest gigs of our career. Best of all, it's still fun!
Let's also take into account that most salaries have not kept pace with the cost of housing, usually the biggest single expense a person can have..
When I was 20/21, I played music full-time, 6 nights a week at a Holiday Inn. I made $140/week. I lived in a nice 1-br apartment, in a nice...
Apart from union dates (which frankly don't pay that well), what constitutes a living wage? It would have to be based on the place you live; a "living wage" in Boise would be useless in L.A. Also, regulating wages then means that they're taxable, which reduces the net. You'd probably end up with...
Didn't watch the video, but I disagree that the pay hasn't changed in 50 years based on both my local gigs (in L.A.) and my tour pay over the last 42 years.
That said, I would agree that little has changed in the last 25 years or so, at least for local gigs.
The fact is, musician pay is very...
I'm in L.A., and have sold at 2 of the swap meets. Well worth the drive for me, and the attenders. I moved about 20 snares and maybe 50 cymbals. Plus Ed has a great shop, but you have to be mindful of his great pricing. Swap meet sellers should not be bringing $2500 kits. Buyers aren't looking...
I've kept records of every gig, school play, marching band parade from 1971 thru this evening. Gig count is 3,508 (may be off by 5 or 6 from a long residency in 1977-78, I could actually get the exact # with a calendar and a little math) with 73+ ahead for the rest of 2025. I can easily search...
I meant that each type of cymbal has different properties that drummers typically look for, and therefore can be judged differently. So a budget ride would likely be more acceptable as a ride, while a crash from that budget line may not be as pleasing.
Agreed that the Alpha is good buy. Unlike crashes where you usually want nice decay, sweetness, maybe some complexity, a ride cymbal basically needs to go 'ping'. So most budget rides can work very well.
I think it's smart to be able to play almost anything, with the understanding that you may not be required or have the opportunity to play it all in real life. I can do a lot of things not required by the four bands I'm in, and I'm fine not normally playing certain styles/parts. But...
The hours are really long, it's hard work, and there's not much glamor in being a 'hand'. Whether you'd be traveling as part of a band's crew, or working specific venues as a 'local crew' and under the direction of the traveling band's crew, you can expect to work somewhere in the 9am to 1am...
It's very expensive to do something like that domestically. That's why just about every drum company has their hardware and lugs made overseas. I believe that Trick might be the exception to that rule.
So, if your ideas are truly game-changers and you feel there'll be major acceptance, you'll...
Rather than putting links to other info and making the reader click back & forth, just list the info. Your discography should be a list of the songs/artists of their releases you're on, and the press section can just be pertinent sentences. Here's an excerpt from my list:
"Calling West, Jay...
